Can anyone explain how this event is legal with regard to amateur status? I have read the R and A rules and they say that amateurs are not allowed to pay for cash prizes or prizes worth more than £500 so how are they getting around this? If you win are you then banned from club events as you would be classed as a professional?

No idea.

But there is some charity that runs GBP 1,000 right now for a whole in one, and of all the winners they play for a car in the final event. And they even ask for GBP 10 to start with.

So there must be a rule around it. Maybe it applies to a game of golf, rather than a hole? Or even a competitive round?

Rules apply to all aspects of golf:
The Rules of Amateur Status apply to all competitions at a golf course, driving range or golf simulator where a playeris asked to replicate a shot similar to that they would encounter during a round of golf.

Hole in one prizes of more than £500 are allowable. (Rules of amateur status 3/2b) Normally they have to be "incidental to a round of golf" but the govering body can appove a HIO prize for a competition played over less than 6 holes (decision 3-2b/1 RoAS) - which would be, l assume, applicable to the AG competition. I can't imagine that AG have not checked this and sought necessary approval?

Hole-in-one prizes are, now, specifically exempt from this rule!
