Good afternoon,
Does anyone have any feedback on the American Golf Custom Fitting experience?
I recently asked about it at my local store (North Birmingham) and said I was interested in the Ping G10 or a Taylor Made driver. Within seconds a Yonex Nanospeed was thrust into my palm and I was told that this was THE driver and had won an award at the Munich Golf Show.
I just got the feeling that the profit margin on Yonex stock was greater and that I was not being listened to.
Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I've posted on here many times that AG will try and flog Yonex, Wilson, Nicklaus and Hogan gear as that is the bigest mark up for them and that in 95% of my experiences the shop staff do not have the knowledge to provide a true custom fitting.

If you are serious abot C/F I would suggest trying various clubs, ideally on a range so you can see them fly and then look at what you want. If you know which make you want you can aarange a fitiing (Cally in Chessington, TM in Basingstoke, Pink in Lincs etc) or at approved fitters. If you are undecided somewhere like the Belfry where there are several manufacturers may be the way to go

I don't like AG's policy of trying push top profit lines and I was very, very close to working for them and was hoping to offer a better level of service at the store I was looking to be deputy manager in.

Not got any experience of AG custom fitting, so won't comment on that, but...

If you like the Ping G10, i'd seriously recommend giving the Srixon ZR-W a go. I had my heart set on a G10 after hitting one really well every time i used it. all i can say is that the Srixon seems to be even better - which i didn't think was possible. Might not be for you, but worth a try.

Also, bear in mind that Ping have just announced the G10s replacement so you may get it cheaper in a few weeks time.

My driver came from AG, they kept pushing me towards a Nicklaus driver even though I could barely hit the thing!

They didn't mention shafts or loft of the club which sadly I wasn't really aware of.

Looking to buy some irons later in the year, doubt AG will be getting my money.

same with my driver. With my irons I tested the MX200, Di9's and for some strange reason gave me the G10's :s then I asked for an iron which was lighter and the FP was the best on test for me but they really didnt help or retest them after they returned to store.

Snainton golf are outlets at pro shops and sell for online prices but you get the physical fitting of a pro, thats what I will be doin next.

Thank you,

This also explains why my mate's wife was flogged a set of Nicklaus woods when buying him a birthday present.

I really did not know that and will be visiting the Belfry as you suggested. ( Deep down I knew they would offer best service, I was just trying to save £20-30.)

I'm going to avoid making too many comments, best not to.
BUT, the trick (as ever with buying anything) is to have a clear idea of what you DO and DON'T want.
I went in to test a W/S Spine and got persuaded to try some other clubs that clearly they were going to make more on. The Wilson had just crashed down from £229 to £99.

I didn't need to deflect the sales pitch....I think I made it pretty clear that I already had two perfectly good drivers (one high, one low loft) and just wanted to see if this particular club went any better/straighter.

I was late in the day, I was tired, so was the chap...he didn't fight me in anyway, but I know from experience to tread with care.

I tried AG for fitting and was given completely the opposite advice to that I'd had from my club pro and another local club! Also experienced the sales push to particular brands! Guess which option I went for???? Not impressed with AG, the staff or the service! Also, to agree with Homer, how can you get a 'feel' for the club just hitting into a net? Much better on a range or practice area where you can see them flying (or not as the case may be)!

Two stories about club buys from American Golf neither that positive I have to say regarding the service.

First around December last year I was looking to buy a new set of irons and with a clear picture of wanting to get the Wilson Staff DI9's I went to AG and after a brief discussion with the salesman I had to push to be able to get a custom fitting session if you can call it that. A few shots in the net and that was about it. I went ahead and bought the clubs as I knew that was what I wanted and have loved them since.

Secondly about two weeks ago I had been struggling with my driver and thought about replacing it so called in to AG this time with the intention of buying the Cobra S9-1 Pro now as this is a club worth over £200 I was expecting a bit of attention but again no real interest from the salesman and only the offer of a few shots in a practice net. Well this time I walked away and pleased to say stuck with my TM Burner and have got back to hitting it well.

the only thing I have ever brought off them is a belt however I rarely go in the one in sheffield as I always feel hassled and Sheff has a good well stocked independent retailer.

I am getting the feeling they are viewed in the same light as Game are for games or Our Price used to be for music? (i.e popular despite overpriced and not neccessarly as specialist as you would expect)

well my experience of ag was quite good , they have a massive flagship store at the trafford centre driving range ,

when i bought my callaway irons last year, i had done my research and had a pretty good idea of what irons would suit me best , i was looking for game improvement irons and was very interested in the callaway big bertha 08, which happened to be the ones they recomended, they advised me to get used to the irons before i had them custom fitted and i had a year to do so free of charg, they even let me have them on 12 months interest free credit :)...

i can only speak for myself with the service i recieved and it was first class .... however i can imagine that most of there stores dont have custom fit centes and driving ranges etc and they guys who work in there stores arent that great !!! my advice would be to do the research and go to a place where tey dont simply thrust a well less known brand in your face and make sure they let you have a good work out with the product they are trying to sell you before you buy it ... it might be also a good idea to ask your local pro where best to go

the advantage of using your local pro is that they will often let you play a few rounds with a demo club so you get a really good idea if it is the right club for you.

I played with a guy a couple of weeks ago. Big bloke, hit a strong ball. He complained that he couldn't control his hybrid, one that AG had fitted him for. It was a Nicklaus with a crap 'A' flex shaft (i.e. between Ladies and Regular). This guy used Rifle 6.5s in his irons, which are close to X flex. Totally unsuitable club. I told him to bring it back and complain.

Hi guys new to the Forum but this thread caught my eye. I've been off the golf scene for about 18 months due to injury and work but have the bug again.
I recently went to my nearest AG and like some posts got talking to a member of staff who wanted to sell me a full set of wilsons and didn't really listen to what a wanted from a set.
I'd really like a custom / made to measure set and haven't decided on one specific set yet as I want to know what the clubs feel like first.
Does anyone know of any quality value fitting srvices around the wales / west areas?

Cheers guys.

Isnt that Golfbuyitonline place?

It is.

I drove down there from Glasgow to get clubs fitted and I must say I had an excellent experience.

The technology they had was first class. They gave great advice. They didn't pressurise. They even made tea/coffee for you while you were out on the range.
