Bought my r9tp irons before christmas, and have only played a few rounds with them, but I am having doubts already, I am not sure if the shaft feels right, and I am starting to think I should have payed the extra and gone for mp53's!!
It could be just me, but I am having to hit more club than my previous tour prefs, I feel like I have to swing within myself to get any result, swing hard and I am hooking, just not liking them too much!
So, should I perserveer or should I admit I bought the wrong clubs and go get somethin else??

Cheers

What shaft was in the TP's?
Are the lofts different?

As a half-decent player you'll "know" fairly soon if they feel right or not. I got measured up for i15's just over a year ago and they were gone before the credit card was paid - well nearly.....

Persevere for a while, don't try too hard but if those doubts continue you'll be hard pressed to play well with them.

Are you more accurate with the R9's? losing a little length to gain accuracy isn't a bad trade-off. So you hit one more club into the green - if it goes closer it's a winner.

My advice is dont persevere too long. I got a shiny new set of Cobra CB's about 3 years ago and the pro fitted me for regular gold 400's but I couldn't hit anything. I recallplaying with John_Findlay at Craigielaw and had 117 yards to the green with little wind and I nailed a 7 iron which just caught the front edge. It should have been a beefy wedge but the shafts were useless and I traded them in for my current CG4tours which have DG S300's. Dont waste a season. Give them a month and then got shot if they dont behave.

Got fit with kbs tour shafts stiff flex, they are lighter than my previous which were s300. imurg i have lost both distance and accuracy and the ball flight i have been getting is not as penetrating. maybe give then another week or 2 incase its me.
cheers chaps

Doubt is a bad thing in golf. Give it another week but as others have said, you're a decent player and if you don't think they're right, they probably aren't.

If you go on the Taylormade website

http://www.taylormadegolf.com/mainlevel/golfshop/irons.html?IsPopUp=0#30

You will see that the lofts of the R9 TP's are on average 2 degrees of loft more than the Standard R9's so this could be a reason for loss of distance.

I also use the S300 shaft in my normal R9's which are lovely to hit and great distance with good accuracy.

Try a normal R9 instead of the R9 TP down at a fitting range and I bet I know which one you will like the best.

were u custom fit or buy off the shelf James? If custom fit then I'd go back to where it was done, explain that you're not happy with the result and get them to explain why this was the right choice for you, and if they cant, to swap for something that is

If I do go down thr route of changing them it wont be for another set of tm's it will most likely be ping s56/7 or mp53/63.

Why are you going down the route of tour irons which are ok when you are striking the ball nicely BUT when you are off your game you are going to struggle like hell?

I cannot understand why so many people put unnecessary pressure on themselves by trying to show that they can hit the tour irons consistantly, when in reality they need a more forgiving iron.

for me - it was advised by my PGA teaching pro (I would have been quite happy with GI clubs, but apparently the larger offset wouldn't have suited my swing/natural right2left shot)

James - I have the same clubs/shaft set-up and find them monster long (although admittedly also pretty darn high)

You have said you've only played a few times with the so is it possible you just aren't swinging great after a lay off and intermmitant games? Maybe try a few range sessions and see how they feel in that environment where you can really focus on your swing and how you hit it

gg i like.the look and feel.of.the irons i.have mentioned my iron play is thr strogest part of my game. if i hit a bad one now and again its most certainly not the club i dont like the clumpier irons and have always used tour style heads for me they usually work.
d2d its not that they are short per say but they are not on par with previous set up and are no more acurate i think i am going to give them a wee bit more time hjs i have been to the range 7/8 times but the range is mats and a diff connex but my swing tempo is.off.a bit so no rash descisions yet they may have a week or 2 reprieve lol

Its a mine field out there matey.

As long as you enjoy your day that is what counts.

Hope you get the set up you like :)

If you decide that you and your R9's are going the same way as Jordan and her hubby the make sure you try as many clubs as you can first rather than having your mind on one specific make or model

Got to agree with the mad man. I got a set of R7 TPs and after a few weeks I sold them and got my std R7s back. In saying that, it took me a while to get into my AP2s but they needed tweaked to get the gaps right between each club.

After getting along with Cobra woods I opted for Cobra irons and persevered for a season but reckon I was hitting the ball nowhere. Glad I kept the old mizzy 15s from a few years back to go back to. This experience has been in my sig for a while now. Still like the woods though
