Am I being hasty or should I look for new irons?

Hi all

Just over a year ago I bought a nice shiney set of Nike Vr Pro combo CB irons......my previous set having been Yonex VMS irons. My reasoning on going for the Nikes was that I'd shot some mid 80s rounds and wanted a set I could move up a gear with and would serve me well for the future.

Since then I've not really progressed how I thought I would.....still occasionally shooting some mid 80s but more often than not playing to my handicap of around 20. When I'm out playing I hit draws and fades (not intentionally) which is costing me shots. Since having my baby boy (who's 15 months old) I don't really get a chance to hit the range during the week so realise I'm facing an uphill battle to improve.

What I am considering though is going for a fitting for new irons along the GI ilk in a hope to get a more forgiving club......

What do you think? Am I being irrational and looking for an excuse or would a change of irons help?

Stick with the Nikes!

If you play/practice more, they'll be fine for what you need.

If you don't, you have more important things to spend loadsacash on!

Just relax and enjoy the golf you do get to play!

You're hitting unpredictable draws and fades because you are inconsistent in swing path and/or face angle at impact. Buying new irons will just mean you are inconsistent with shiny new clubs.
It ain't the clubs.

Buy them if you want them but it is not a magic bullet that is going to give you straight shots.

not even read the text, just go buy some irons. you know it makes sense!

seriously though some new irons may help your thinking but not practicing and turning up expecting to play better week on week is unlikely a few people can but most of us wont. I have found this myself having previously been off 8 before a break starting back @ 10 and hoping to go forwards I have rapidly gone backwards still plenty of good shots but not enough consistantcy to get h/cap lower.

Can't harm to try a few again clubs at a range or AG and see how you feel - you don't appear confident with the Nikes

Have a look at what's around and see if you find something that takes your fancy

Do the maths

kids = maturity(occasionally) = less time for golf (often) = revised expectations (eventually) !!!

I got rid of my wilson di7 irons last autumn and replaced them with the vr combos that you have. I find very little difference in terms of the skill required to hit them well compared to the chunky game improver wilsons. the only difference I find is how they feel off the face and the slightly lower trajectory, which other than 'wanting to' are about the only two reasons buy new irons.

The inconsistent shots come from poor technique. However, GI clubs may be a bit more forgiving but if your path is wrong then it won't make a difference. I would suggest a lesson (yes I know) which would be cheaper and may straighten the Nike's out. They are decent enough clubs so if you can get them working well then happy days and golf will be much more fun
