Alwoodley - How good is it?

played Moortown & Alwoodley - preferred Alwoodley.
£60 till April 15th & £50 summer twilight.

Playing Ganton in March.

A friend of mine plays a lot of corporate golf in the NE, Yorkshire etc. He played both Ganton and Alwoodley this year and rated them highly. The downside of Ganton was the attitude of the place, in particular inside the clubhouse. Visitors were second class and the clubhouse has a separate bar for members and visitors and woe betide anyone who crosses the line in the bar, and yes there is a line. For that alone I would not touch Ganton and whilst he liked the course a great deal the reception he received put a downer on his day. The week after Ganton he played Alwoodley and was full of praise. Great course, friendly reception, wonderful all round atmosphere. I haven't played either but from his comments I would play Alwoodley above anything else.

What your friend told you about Ganton is bull****. All that about visitors being second class is a myth.

Not played Alwoodley but have played Ganton. Got a great welcome in the clubhouse, including the Club Secretary coming over whilst we were having a beer and chatting for ages. Would be happy to return to Ganton any day of the week...

I played Ganton and the reception was fine. The secretary walked us out to the first tee and pointed out a few things before watching us tee off. Did feel a little that we were being watched but not really a problem as we were all Cat 1 golfers.

The course is superb with some of the finest bunkering you'll see anywhere. Good chance you will wear out your sand wedge but I'm sure the pro will do you a deal on a new one after your round ;)

Not played Alwoodley yet but only heard good things about it, very high on my wishlist

No, his experience. Top moment was when lady behind the bar nearly hyper ventilated when one of the party nearly crossed the line to look at the beers on tap. "Members only" came the shriek. I met another of the party a few weeks after hearing the story first time and the two of them were in kinks laughing at the memory. As has been said many times before on this forum you only need one or two people to be out of order and a bad image is portrayed. That was his experience of Ganton. If yours is better then good for you but it does not mean that everyone has the same good fortune.

I've not played it but from what I've been told by a few is that it's the exclusivity of Alwoodley that makes it special, obviously for the price of the place it will be in great condition and that

Quite an expensive summer price, but is it worth the £100 and how good is it, compared to Ganton and Moortown?

It's reduced if you tee off 2pm :mmm: and before 4pm. Only heard good things.

I never had any issues at ganton well in the clubhouse the welcome was fine, trying to get a score can Definately say the course won!

I prefer Moortown and Alwoodly over Ganton which I don't think Is that great. Not many standout holes and not a memorable course to play.

Be careful when you state that, you might get accused of snobbery.........

Not played Ganton but really enjoyed alwoodley. Even though the course wasn't in the best condition it still didn't put me off. Miles better than Moortown. Really enjoyed the layout of the course at alwoodley and its also a bonus that its a nice easy walk.
