Hi guys,
I think I have entered a parallel universe at the minute because HID has allowed me to buy a new set of irons this month and then this morning she commented on how cheap membership to Alton Golf Club was and why hadn't I thought about becoming a member there.

I am currently a bit of a journeyman and play a number of local courses and have recently been playing the 12 hole at Petersfield if any of you know it. The membership fees are very good at Alton but I am wondering if that is for a reason. I was hoping someone on here had played it and could let me know what they thought of it if possible. I am going to try and get down there in a few weeks as am away at the minute but would be good to get some idea before then.

Thanks in advance

Phil

Little 9 holer isn't it?

Played it ages ago, not stuck in the memory (good or bad)

All I remember was a guy come out and very politely tell my mate there was a trolley ban. The guy took his trolley back to the car for him leaving my mate to walk 13 holes carrying a cart bag by the small carry handle!!

If you are based in Bordon you should have a look at the Club just around the corner from you in Blackmoor.;)

It doesn't say on the website that it is a 9 hole but when I was looking at pictures from google it looked that way to me and you just go round twice. The measurements they have on their website though are completely different for the front nine and back nine so was trying to work it out.

Was there a reason for the trolley ban or is that a year round thing?

Thanks

Richart,
I wondered how long it would be before you made that suggestion. I would be keen on joining blackmoor but I think the fees would be a bit steep for me. I also saw on their website that they prefer you to have a handicap certificate if possible which would count me out.

Was middle of winter - kind of remember talking to my mate about why there was a ban - didn't seem necessary as ground was firm, well drained.
Guy was as polite as they come though, very friendly club at the time

The Alton that I know is a nine holer and the yardages are different as they have two sets of tees.

That explains it then. Have you played it before? How did you find it? That's good that they are friendly but I have a dodgy back so would be interesting to see how often they have the trolley ban.

I havent played Alton so cant comment, the 12 holer at Petersfield didnt impress me at all.

Blackmoor is a good course and local, then there is also Blacknest in Bordon, which is nice enough, however doesn't drain very well in the winter, but good value.

Alton is ok but there are some crossover tee/fairways & some very steep ascent/decents. Friendly enough place though. What is your budget for membership, perhaps some on here might have a few alternatives?

Not sure on budget, depends what the wife lets me but as long as I am getting "value" (I know that is very subjective) then don't mind too much. The problem is I play football on a Saturday at the minute so until the new year when I may take a break to play golf then it is difficult to justify the cost. I have played Blacknest before and liked that but I haven't played it for about 2-3 years probably and it has been taken over so might give that a go.

The biggest advantage of Alton was the generous age range they allowed to get reduced fees which was up to 29 whereas most others round here appear to charge you full rate from 21.

Just had a quick look at Petersfield and they appear to offer quite a good rate for us youngsters so that may be another option. I have played that course twice before and quite liked it but would be good to hear from anyone else that has played it.

Cheers

Richart,
I feel a lot older than I am but I will be 25 next Friday so I would qualify for that. I was going to say that I couldn't see your rates on your website but if I click on the application form they are on the bottom so that solved that. Just been looking and Alton is the cheapest then Petersfield and Alresford are the same then Blackmoor. I think Petersfield would win over Alresford as the further away it is the less likely I am going to use it. I think an 18 would be better as well as then I could mix it up by just playing a front nine or back nine if I was short of time.

Pretty much this^^^ I do remember the greens being good - but it is some time since I played there and I know they have had a bit of a disruptive last 10yrs so don't know how things currently stand. I'll ask around my place see if anyone has any up-to-date views.

Alresford is a nice course. I would definitely play Alresford and Petersfield before you choose. No point joining a course just because it is closer, and then finding out you don't like it. Forget Blacknest and not just because it is very wet in the winter.

Do Old Thorns do any deals ?

What's up with Backnest these days - haven't played it for getting on 15yrs - so it was pretty new.

SILH-Thanks for help and interested to hear any updates.

Richart-I have played Petersfield twice using a groupon deal and found it okay but a few hills (nothing too major) but with my bad back I got a buggy the second time. I do have a push trolley now rather than a pull one and that has made a huge difference so may not be too bad. My wifes granddad is a member of Alresford so need to have a word with him and see if he could either take me round or just head over there myself to give it a go.

Old Thorns I have filled out one of their forms and waiting to hear back from them as they don't have any figures online but never played there so would need to get myself down there.
