Hey guys i currently have a 3 wood in my bag but find i dont actually use it that much. From the tee if im playing safe i use my 19 deg hybrid and again from the fairway. So would it be better for me to get a lower lofted hybrid for tee shots that need to be played safe if so any recommendations?

Cheers

As a general rule, lower lofted hybrids are trickier to use...
Have you tried a 4 or 5 wood - 17-18°..?

Thanks imurg i dont struggle too much with a 3 wood off the tee just find it easier and straighter with a hybrid would you say a lower hybrid would be hard off the tee?

I have a 17° Callaway Heavenwood hybrid that I have no problem hitting as well or as badly as any other club in my bag!

I had a lightweight steel shaft put in it, as the head is quite heavy, so while I don't get as much distance as I might with graphite, it's possibly a little more forgiving.

Try a few out and see what you think

I would argue that if you can learn to hit a 3 wood and then progress onto a driver you'll be flying and won't find yourself compromised off the tee. My standard and boring (nay repetitive answer) is go see a good PGA pro and learn how to hit the three wood off the tee and then go back and get the driver sorted. Once you bomb it 350 yards as we all do on the forum you'll be laughing

I've just bought a rocketballz 16.5 degree hybrid for use on longer courses with 440+ par 4's on it, and it sits in between my 3 wood and 19 degree hybrid.

They are generally going for about £50-60 on ebay at the moment.

Good club, so far.

My advice matey is to take the 3 wood out of the bag and use it a bit more often then, I've been struggling with my driver of late so much so that I've locked it away and am now just using my 3/15* fairway wood off the tee, I also discovered something last Friday "it don't half hack a 535yd par5 down to size" I was at the green in 3, 3 wood tee, 3 wood fairway, 6 iron right of the green pin high, job done !...

ps, it all went waste though cos I chipped on and then 3 putted !...

Best thing to do would be go to a place where you could try out all options and either be on a range or launch monitor to see the results.

Taylormade SLDR Mini Driver is a superb fairway finding machine for tight holes.

If he's rejecting the 3-wood, then the SLDR Mini ain't going to help!

Indeed, lower loft hybrids tend to be a bit more difficult to hit well, especially off the deck. 5 or 4W might be an option, but needs 'testing' before spending much cash! 5W can be a particularly useful club! But worth persevering (and practicing!) with the 3W imo to gain the confidence needed to commit to that shot anyway!

£200?!?! You can pick them up brand new for less than half that, as I did

I'll still save me £100 and use me 3 wood, although I will say I got some decent range out of it, on our 453yd 1st I ended up about 20yds short of the 150yd markers so about 280 off the tee (if my maths is rite) hmm come to think of it maybe it wasn't so bad !...:smirk:

Ha ha you will be shot down for claiming that sort of distance!

Horses for courses and I only use mine off the tee and my 19 degree hybrid off the deck, just like the OP

Yeah more than likely, although the first tee is about 60-70 feet above fairway level so I did get a fair bit of run on but having said that I was on the practice ground at about 6:00 this morning consistently driving 200+ with my 3 wood, I find that a lot of people who can't achieve something themselves seem to think that "because they can't do it, nobody can" so yeah horses for courses !...

Just out of interest buddy, I pitched on our 10th a couple of weekends ago with said 3 wood, 232 into a slight headwind !...;)

I'm heading out for a solo round at 8am tomorrow but I really don't care how long I can hit it anymore. I set other goals these days just for my own amusement like how many one putts, birdie every hole (not on the same round although that would be nice), skip the ball over a pond (honestly) etc etc

Yeah I know where you're coming from, at the end of the day being able to hit a drive well is all well and good but if you can't muster up a decent putt to save your life then it's all in vein which to be honest is where I find myself at the moment, last Friday I ended up just right of our 11th green (520yd, par5) for 3, chipped on beautifully and then proceeded to 3 putt my way to a 7 "un-frickin-believable" all the hard work off the tee gone to waste, story of my life mate !...:smirk:
