How much of your game is about confidence rather than skill & technique.

Till a few weeks ago, I struggled to hit a flop shot. I would always end up thin-ing it. Two weeks ago played a few games while on holidays with rented clubs and where no one knew me. With nothing to lose, hit a few flops. Surprised myself with the results.

This weekend, played a 9 hole comp. Did not think twice about pulling out my sand wedge and hitting some great flop shot to putting distance of the holes. Ended the day with shooting 5 under my HC as more than a few were single putts!!!

No change in technique, just a belief that I will get the result rather than catching it thin...

Lol you and gibbo post a very similar topic within an hour of each other?!

Anyway, I think a its down to positive mental attitude or PMA. I suppose you could call that confidence also, but imagine the shot, see the shot, play the shot. If you think you are going to thin it through the back, you probably will! Or a huge fat as you over compensate for the thought of thinning it!

Belief in your ability is what you need, and when I say that I mean your actual ability, not what you would like to do! I would like to play flop shots like mickelson! Never gonna happen...

Anyway, you owe me am email young man! ;)

It has shed loads to do with it. I struggle with my short game. It has had technical flaws and that has drained confidence. That just made everything tense so the flaws show up, confidence drains and the cycle repeats. Now I'm back using the linear method I am more confident and there are signs of it getting better so it's a case of building trust, gaining confidence and knocking it close regularly

Confidence is everything imo.

Tried out my old putter yesterday, had no confidence in it, missed plenty of putts. Hopefully going back to the other putter will do the trick.

I also find that when i've cleaned the clubs and grips it inspires more confidence. Nothing worse than looking down at a clubface thats all dirty and grassy !
