I am away to Portugal in a few days, staying near Albufeira.

Has anyone played courses around there and have some feedback on where to play? Also, is it better to book with one of the on-line company's prior to leaving or wait until out there to book?

Any advice appreciated.

Quinta - All three courses are good, but my preferred is the south course.
Vale de Lobo - Royal is ok
Old Course is one of my favourites

I've always booked with an online company, not too sure on availability when you're out there but you may be lucky if it's just a couple of you and they may put to with another group

Forgot to add that these course are based around Vilamoura so about 20-30mins away

I ended up booking our rounds through Golf Breaks as i was able to play them off against another competitor, But if you are going to play the odd round i would just book as you go.

Its not too far to villamoura from where you are and you can do twilight golf at all of the oceanica courses for basically half price.

Stayed in the Algarve last year, and played the Pestana, and Oceanico courses, and would recommend both. The Pestana were more reasonably priced, and all in very good condition. They're used to play the Senior Tour qualifying, so they're well kept, especially the Vale De Pinta course, which is used to host the final stage of qualifying. Mark Crossfield has done videos with Your Golf Travel on most of those courses, so worth checking out. As mentioned above, I'd also recommend playing in Twilight if possible, the discounts can be massive!

Feel like crying reading this :( I'm away on Thursday, originally headed for villamoura, where the plan was to escape for a few hours to have a game. then the gf and kids ganged up on me and I'm now going the costa brava ( no courses in a 20km radius)

on the good side, i am going away which has to be better than work :D

Hi , been going there since 2000 , Pop in and see my mates golf agency , I met them over there on my 1st trip and have booked with them ever since and they more like friends and many friends of mine book there too a, English couple , The office is on the way to Vale Do Lobo and Quinta and its called Links Golf , its on the left hand side as you drive up to Quinta , You can google them under that name or aim4golf and test the water if you like but do not go to any of the pro shops there and pay on the day as its can cost a lot more , Play Lanranjal , the old course , near where you are staying there is Pinta , silves , Garmacho , Bovista is ok , The best courses there are more expensive , best to mix them , .................need any more info then let me know

Pre - book and there is better chance of getting your tee times , 1st few weeks in oct is peak time over there and do check if they are doing course work , played quinta south course , got there and they just done the green , great big holes ..........

Stayed in Vilamoura which was spot on , we'd booked Laguna,Millennium and Pinhal, Pinhal was a dump greens were poor but the lad did say they'd re done some of them ,that was May. You get some good deals if you play at 3pm ,Victoria was 70 euro but we went drinking instead
