Hi there,

Have recently played South at Quinta do Lago and thought it was nothing to write home about and certainly not worth the green fees I heard some in the clubhouse mention. We also played Laranjal which had a few nice holes but again wasn't worth the 130euros I was told it cost to play there.

Hopefully some others in here with better Algarve knowledge will point out the hidden gems.

Hope this helps.

If you are in VALE DO LOBO the nearest courses are :- PINHEIROS ALTOS

QUINTA DO LAGO

SAN LORENZO

VILA SOL

OCEANICO OLD COURSE

The first thing I would say about Algarve golf is that you MUST try and negotiate on price. I am part of a group which visits every spring, and the 130 Euros you quote for Laranjal is 35 Euros more than we have ever paid. This spring we paid 95 Euros, which included a buggy, and it was worth every single Euro - a quality course with the biggest, most undulating greens I have ever seen. Well worth a visit.

As for the others mentioned already on this thread? San Lorenzo is a nice layout, but we found it in very poor condition this year and the customer service is ATTROCIOUS. The worst I have ever come across, and as such I will not be rushing back. The Old is a classic Algarve course, although it can be very, very busy so be aware of being offered late tee times - we have had to finish on the 15th before now because of failing light.

Others worth trying within an hour of Faro include Quinta da Ria - cheaper than the resort courses, perhaps not a course which will blow you away, but enjoyable nevertheless. The jewel in the Algarve crown must be Monte Rei - a stunning Nicklaus course which I never get tired of playing. Not cheap, but if you played a course of that quality in the UK you can wave goodbye to considerably more than you will pay in Portugal.

Have a look at the Oceanico group of courses, mainly around Vilamoura. Some very good value ones in there which I've played loads of times with my kids. Great value if you tee off around midday. Golf over there is very expensive at this time of the year and whilst courses like San Lorenzo, etc are fantastic, it's a very good way to empty your wallet quickly!

You're right (post above) in what you have said about negotiating price. I heard someone say it was 130euros to play Laranjal and my thoughts were that it wasn't a bad course but certainly not a 130euro course. I also got the impression that there are lots if different variations in the green fee rates depending on how you book your tee off times and when you book them. I went as part of an overall package so everything rolled into one goat was what I was looking at. I feel that some of the courses in the algarve are geared/priced towards a certain market. There appear to be many wealthy home owners in the Faro/Quinta/VDL areas and the green fees are high in this area.

The courses don't match up to some of the fees being charged. I think the first time I went to the Algarve the Old Course was the most expensive round in the package at around 95euros but it was well worth it. The most recent time the VDL courses will have been most expensive but the courses don't match the fees, generally, although the views and the weather could almost make up for that.

if I was going back in the future with a group of guys I of mixed handicaps I would base myself in, and play the courses at, Vilamoura purely for location amenities and value for money.
