Played in my first competition yesterday since returning from my neck injury. I unfortunately suffer from nerves quite badly to the point where I really struggle sleeping the night before. As far as I can tell it's not the fact that I'm playing in a competition that makes me nervous, it's playing with people I don't know as I'm generally quite a shy person. So, didn't sleep too well Saturday night, felt a bit rough Sunday morning which seemed hysterical to Daveyck2k.
Tried to calm the nerves by having a bit of a chat with my playing partners on the 10th tee (Shotgun start) which helped a bit but I went on to play the back 9 (our front 9) like a bit of a knob and came in with 12 points. I hit my first tee shot well but knobbed my second shot into the trees ended in a blob....on our 3rd hole (12th) I pulled my tee shot into the trees, took 2 shots to duff it out, knobbed a 4 iron, launched a wedge out the back of the green. Missed a putt of less than a foot on the par 3 4th (13th) to end with a 4 after having been the only one to hit the green off the tee. You get the jist of how things were going, by the time I walked off our 9th (18th) I was ready to go home, I was surprised I had 12 points, and 10-18 is usually where I play my best golf as it's more open and you can have a bit of a spray.
We walked over to the 1st tee and one of my playing partners pulled out a drink called Kings Ginger and 4 silver shot glasses. Now, I don't drink, if it's a special occasion I might have one but other than that I won't touch alcohol....boring I know. He'd already poured one out for me and I felt it was rude to say no so downed this sweet tasting liqueur. It hit me in the back of the throat, gave me a little bit of a cough but was actually very nice........I then went on what can only be described as a rip! Double bogeyed the 10th (1st) which was all my fault getting a bit adventurous with my second shot, then went Par, Par, Birdie, Bogey, Par, Birdie and if you know me and how I normally play 1-9 at our place, you'll know that that was something very rare for me! The birdie on the 4th hole was a 30 foot putt with a 15 foot left to right break straight in the middle of the cup.
So.....I'm now off to Colchester to buy some Kings Ginger and some shot glasses.....next weekend I'm chugging the bottle and shooting gross 10 under!
