No not the song !

Joost Luiten scored one today. Anyone had one, if so do you rate it higher than a hole in one, I havn't had one but suspect I would rank it higher in my little golfing book of personal achievements (a thin tome).

Swinger had one, and it was also a hole in one. He is a bit of a show off though, and will know doubt be on to tell you about his other ones.;)

Had one in a social round once. Not been playing that well so on the 18th got the Driver out and nailed it right down the middle which went 268 yards which left me 220 to the green so had a go for it with the 3 wood and watched it pitch just short of the green and roll into the hole. Never come close to one in a comp though

I had one when I was 15. It was a 2 on the par 5 7th hole at Hallowes GC in Derbyshire. I had to wait until I was 42 to get my first hole in one though.

On reflection, the albatross felt more special but until I had got a hole in one, I always felt that it was a secondary achievement.

never had a double eagle or albatross- would really smarten up a card, especially if you had a couple of 2's as well

I've been 6 inches away from a 2 on a par 5 and 3 feet away on a par 4…
Also hit the pin several times - still waiting for one to drop...

BOOM! Thanks for the intro Rich!

Without doubt an Albatross is better than a hole in one unless.... as Rich has already eluded to.... that the Albatross is a hole in one!

I've had three in total, didn't manage to add to the tally last year and there is a fair chance I may never do! I've also had three hole in one's (one counting in both) but always consider the Albatross above a hole in one on a par three, they are so few of them it just makes it a little more special.

Two of the three were on par 5's that generally play a little on the short side (they are 495y and 497y) and I've hole out after a drive with a 9 and PW, which to be fair are less club than I would hit on an average par 3 by a good club or two. The first one was on a par 4 and was a bit of a peach, hit a driver on our 17th which was playing 302.25y on the day, slightly down wind off the left, ball left the tee going just left of centre and then cut back in line with the hole...where it landed without touching anything else. That felt pretty good!

All a couple of years back now though and plenty more bad shots to make up for them!

Had neither yet, but personally I think I'd prefer to hole a par three. Obviously luck involved in both, but I've been a lot closer on approaching par 3's, than slapping a 3 wood on a par 5 at the green. Just fell the hole in one has slightly more skill than the albatross!

I've seen more lucky hole in ones on par 3's than Albatrosses.

I'd imagine you've seen more hole in ones than albatrosses too?

my point is this, give me a 150yard > par 3 and I'm aiming at the hole. So I intend to use the skill I consider myself to have. If it goes in, it's lucky but intended. Give me <220 yards and I'm just hoping to get close to the green. If it goes in it's pure luck.

I don't agree. :p

Well that's not a problem, as it's only my opinion. I'd happily take either. But would be more satisfied with a hole in one. Maybe as I get better and more confident hitting long irons and woods from the fairway that will change. I accept that to get the opportunity of an albatross on a par five you'll generally have had to hit a good tee so skill is involved. But in the case of holing on a par four. I defy anyone to hit 10 tee shots 300+ yards and have a 10ft dispersion that would suggest it was more skill than luck.

Most decent golfers would struggle to have 10ft dispersion with a PW (160y) so would that just be luck too if they holed it?

Well we're in different leagues if you hit your pw 160 for a start. Re the dispersion, maybe 10 ft is too tight. But if I aimed 10 pw at a green I'd expect to hit it at least 7 times. If there was a green at my driver limit I'd be happy to hit it once.

Generally when watching golf, on par 3's golfers will go for the hole. On a par 5 if they hitting their 2nd commentators will talk about the safe miss. Suggesting that they're intentions are to get a easy eagle than actually expecting to hole it. But, like I said it's only my opinion. I'm not gonna change it, and would expect you to change yours.

if I hit one of each in the near future I'll get back on here, and tell you which felt better.

The 160 was just put there as a reminder of the forum average PW distance of which I don't quite match up to!

Good luck in getting one, I just hope that when you do it'll be because you were aiming at the hole and trying to get as close as possible as opposed to up around the green!

Interesting, I have had 4 hole in ones, the last one about three weeks ago, but I still hanker after an albatross and would rate it higher.

Our club championship was won with an albatross on the 18th this year. Driver then 3 wood just rolled in to win by 2 shots. Incredible finish
