I found my ball in a small copse of trees today, with several stalky plants growing out of the ground around it. My first attempt at playing the ball was a complete air shot, but broke off several stalks, making the next shot rather easier. Any penalties for improving my lie?

No! Because you (or was it he!) didn't 'improve your lie'!

You/He made a stroke and acquired a new lie! Just as you/he would have if you/he had connected.

No. You have made and are counting a stroke. Your lie is what the ball is in after your stroke is completed.

It's the same as those wonderful attempts I've made with my lob wedge in rather too thick grass when the club goes completely underneath the ball and shifts nothing more than a load of grass. :o

I can remember my classic one of those from the hip high hay on Gullane #3 (12th? - the dogleg around the hill/tree). Did demonstrate that I kept my head down, as all i saw was the ball drop a couple of inches!
