What is going on with European tour player F Aguilar, last week he was penalised 4 shots at the Turkey Open and this week at the Nedbank they have kicked him out of the tournament with a DQ,he was actually leading that tournament at one stage.
Bizarre circumstances in Turkey leading to being penalised

He's a very good player but something aint right.

Turkey was pretty straightforward (apart from the briefly incorrect ruling that was corrected). Most on here realise that you basically can't change your 14 clubs during the round.
The Nedbank was unfortunate, but he's neither the first player, nor will he be the last, to sign for the wrong score on a hole. If you want more info he's posted to his Facebook page recently.
It's always a shame and I'm sure he will bounce back as he's got a good game.

In this day and age with tv, people keeping score on each hole etc isnt it a bit archaic that players are DQ'd for signing for a wrong score in European / PGA Tour events etc? This is the 21st century but the sport insists on 19th century ways of keeping score. (Obviously this is only an issue for televised tournaments before the pedants ask how it would work in their monthly medal)

Turkey was pretty straightforward but surely a player of his statue knows he cant change his clubs during play

1. This was a televised tournament, and with all the 21st century ways available.
2. The person assigned to record the score recorded the wrong one.
3. No one else who was also fulfilling on3 of the roles you reference noticed, no one else commented on the posted scores, nothing....
4. The player subsequently realised and contacted the committee straight away - a longstanding trait that's lasted centuries and long may it continue.

The fastest way to increase the potential for error is to add additional checking layers (statistically proven in such areas as the distribution of medical drugs).

So genuine errors by a number of parties and the player still receives a draconian punishment despite his honesty.

Interesting interpretation - have you thought about a career in politics?

I was simply pointing out that the various elements you suggested would have avoided this didn't in this instance, which supports the view that they wouldn't guarantee to solve the issue going forwards.

If this had been the last round, and he had won by 1 shot, whoever came second might have been slightly miffed that these draconian rules wouldn't have changed the result!

It's not exactly a hardship to mark your card is it - it's a very basic thing that we all must do and it doesn't take 5 minutes to double check

There are plenty genuine errors that could occur in golf - the rules are there to make sure people don't benefit from errors genuine or other and they are all applied fairly to everyone playing

One of the most basic and simple requirements is counting your shots and then marking how many you had - very simple

Aguilar took the trip to Turkey booked into a hotel for a 5 day stay, changes his clubs mid event for the 4 stroke penalty to come nowhere, then he travels all the way to South Africa again a 5 day hotel stay and puts the wrong score down for a hole and gets a DQ.
I find this bloody amazing for a tour pro :confused:

I thought they all went to the scorers hut and checked the cards so why wasn't it picked up there?

You need to read Felipe's account but, basically, he checked twice but missed the error. I suspect his mind was elsewhere (I didn't watch it but didn't he have a relatively poor last couple of holes?). It won't happen again (his words!)

Haven't we all said that, only to mess up in the same way again some time later?
Couple of years ago I played the wrong ball because I simply forgot to double check it was mine.
"I'll never do that again". Yeh, right - played the wrong ball again just a few weeks later.
Never say never.

You do realise that you've now tempted fate, and are destined to play a wrong ball in the near future ;)

PS. I see that PhilTheFragger had to censor my language. My apologies. I know for the future not to include naughty words, even if only represented by stars.
