This year has been a good year for me, slowly but surely making my way down to single figures. I went out on Tuesday and hit the ball beautifully on my way to my 2nd gross 74 in the space of a month so went into today's s'ford full of confidence. I scrambled a par on the 1st and teed it up on the 2nd feeling I'd dodged a bullet. An iffy tee shot on two was rescued with a nice layup to 145 yds and I somehow managed to make a double bogey 7 from there. I've had iffy starts before so I wasn't too concerned but 16 holes of what you would only loosely describe as golf I walked off totally bewildered with 25pts. I really can't think of a word that describes how I played but if I told you it peaked in places at average you'll get the picture.

I honestly didn't think it was possible for me to play that badly, I guess that's the golfing god's way of bringing me back down to earth. The good thing is it was so bad I'm not even bothering to try to analyse what went wrong, it was just one of those days and I hope it's a long time before I get another one :o

Bad luck. Feel similar. Striking the ball better than ever, striping it off the tee, but can't put a score together.
If you are shooting regular low seventies, then single digits is way within reach, you just need to persevere and you will get there.
Expectations are a terrible thing though. Added burden.

Shows you how stupid this game is. Same comp as hawkeye and I've been playing really badly. Lost 4 balls in 9 holes yesterday and confidence totally shot. No idea where the ball is going or any control over my swing. I three putted the first for a single point but unlike Mike birdied the 2nd to get it all back. Hit a ball OB on the par 3 6th and made birdie with the second for a 4 (2 points)

I only scored on 15 holes and couldn't even score on the 138 yard par 3 8th (SI 18). Despite that I came home with 39 points but I can honestly say I've no idea how. Granted the putter was warm but included in that lot were a shank, several fats, duffed chips and a lost ball. There was also a chip in birdie. Never once did I stand over the ball and think "I know what I'm doing here and where its going" Total madness. It was trance like but its my first cut in recent memory and I played the back 9 in 37 (2 over gross) with two double bogies

You will bounce back straight away im sure, sometimes im the same, after a few good rounds you think you have cracked it and you feel you can take it to the next level.
However thats when it kicks you in the teeth and brings you back down to earth.
Chin up

Stupid game! (not really :))

I'm on the Hawkeye side of this one.
Shot gross 70 (-1) earlier in the week on a course I'd only ever played once before.
Captain's day today and 0.1 back including 4 double bogeys. 1 of them after being 70yds short in 1.

My point was I lost 4 balls in less than 9 holes yesterday and played like a 28 handicap beginner. Was all over the practice ground in warm up (although I perfected the shank well). It's hard to have any confidence when you stand over the ball with no idea where its going. Some of the shots I hit were rank poor and yet I made 3 birdies (4 if you count the 2 with my second ball at the 6th). I'm not swinging it well and still can't chip and yet for 15 holes I got it round with no clue how - thats the stupid part.

Mike is playing well enough for this to be a blip. He had a mare in a comp a while back and bounced back with a couple of real low scores so I'm sure he'll do the same again

Stupid game this, since I posted this last weekend I've played 3 times in the last 5 days and broken 80 each time, 75 on Tuesday in a bounce game. 76 on Thursday in the midweek medal and a 79 this morning in the 1st round of the Longhurst Cup - which makes last Saturday all the more bizarre. Still onwards and upwards, round 2 on Monday, can I make it four in a row sub 80?

In a callous sense I hope not as its every man for himself and I'm lurking a shot behind and biding my time but I also hope you do as you didn't really play that great today and ground the score out well. Brilliant recovery down 16 after birdie at 15 but a shame you only completed 4/5 of the job down the last.

I hope to be able to stand upright and without feeling queasy on every shot on Monday and so can play wiht some purpose and not in a hungover state. Still considering the way I hit it and the way I was feeling level par will do just fine for now. I think -4 for the two rounds will be very close so I figure I need a nett 66 on Monday
