Popped into AG in Finchley last night (well, it’s easier than going to the gym). Had a wander around, and got talking to one of their staff, who plays off 3, and wasn’t a spotty teenager. I mentioned that I was interested in the Titleist ZB combos, but it was a pity they didn’t have any to try.

Turns out they have a massive bag of 6 irons in their driving nets, and in there was a ZB 6 iron, so I couldn’t resist having a swing on their launch monitor. For some reason I had a bit of a hook last night (not that unusual, but I think it comes from being a touch self conscious, which left me over rotating my hands – better than a shank I suppose), but it was nice to read some of the data. My swing speed is 84mph with a 6i, and I carry the ball 160 yards, with a DG S300 shaft. According to the sales guy, this reads slightly short compared to hitting outside – not sure why, but I am certain I could put a better swing on it with golf shoes on, hitting off grass. Anyway, apparently this shaft is perfect for my swing speed (by a coincidence I have this shaft in my Macgregor blades, which weren’t custom fit), but I would also like to compare the project X rifle 6 in the same iron.

Having tried this club, I need these irons. They are lovely. More than lovely. And shiny, did I mention shiny.

Now AG sell the ZBs at £650 including custom fit. (The guy explained their custom fit program, and it does sound ok). I have seen these clubs on the internet at £570 with DG S300s, but obviously not custom fit. Now I am 6 ft 2 ish, so I may need them a bit longer than standard, and if I am paying all this money (which I haven’t got), then they need to be right.

So, I now need to find somewhere that sells them at £570 ish, with custom fit, (or will refer me to Titleists custom fit center at St Ives or the Belfry, which I would prefer, as I am sure Titleist do it best). Or, I need to buy a set for naff all on ebay, and get them reshafted.

Hmm.

Anyway, after all the horror stories regarding AG, I was quite impressed last night, and the guy didn’t even mention Nicklaus clubs.

Morning Murph.

Won't AG price match against the £570? They advertise on their website about doing so. Other than that not sure, I know Golfbuyitonline (google it) not far from me, have excellent cusotm fit options and are selling around the £570 mark, but this obviously means a trip up the M4. :( However if you did come this far you could always come and have a game at southerndown on top. :D

I'm sure though AG will match the price and custom fit for you.

Tried the ZB's myself a while back but found them too heavy in the head, went for the MP60's instead.

Good luck and happy shopping.

John.

Yes AG should price match. Just tell them you want them but you wont be buying them from there when you know they are cheaper else where, thats what i did and they just price matched.

Sounds interesting, I will have to give it a go.

Golfbuyitonline are doing them for £579, but their web site won't give me an address for the custom fit, which is stupid, since they offer it online, but don't say where.

Need to get the finance in place first!

Johng - I like heavy heads. My current blades are pretty heavy too. I have a bit of a wild swing, and if the club is too light, it gets out of hand.

According to the computer I have a tempo of 1 second, which is supposed to be ideal. Interesting, as I have always likened myself to a strimmer.

You are looking at the progressive set.....? not the out and out blades?

Loads of pros seem to have the Titleist cart in their shops, phone round a few clubs maybe?

You are going to benefit from a good custom fit......maybe you could 'phone Titleist, tell them your location and see who they recommend. For this cash....go to the best place for the fitting....probably not a golf superstore i.m.o.

Yeah, I am looking at the progressive set. I have a full set of blades at the moment, and figure a progressive set would offer the best of both worlds. My long iron striking isn't the best.

I need to talk to a mate of mine who got his sticks from Titleist in St Ives, and had them made up that morning by titleist. His pro (dad) fixed up the fitting for him. If he can get me a good deal, I would happily drive to St Ives to get properly fitted by Titleist.

Golfbuyit are literally 2 mins off J34 on the M4. Small village called Hensol. A stones throw from the Vale of Glamorgan glof club, who also do custom fitting.

I can recommend progressive irons.

The 735's are lovely clubs and you can do whatever shaping you want with the long irons. The cavities are only shallow.

At 6-2 you definately need fitting, I'm 6-1 and the extra 1/2 inch on my clubs has made a big difference to me.

Good luck with getting the right clubs Murph!!

What viscount did you never realise it was there ? It is definitely worth going to for the fitting the whole experience is meant to be superb. There was a competition winner in GM a few months back who got to be fitted at the Brampton (few miles away) fitting centre and then go to the factory which is in St Ives and that got a great write up. Everyone I know who goes there comes away besotted. Plus you get the chance to buy discount pro vs that are perfect except for the logo printing (who cares!) so you can get some bargains- although saying this only 1 of the 3 people I know who went there were offered this.

This isn't necessarily the case, I am 6 ft 2 and only need 1/4 inch longer for example as it depends on the length of your arms in relation to your body as opposed to just your height. So if they have really long arms it is possible for a peter crouch style bloke to have regular length clubs. That said I admit that most people above 6ft do end up with longer clubs as their arms do not grow as much as their legs in comparison to an average built man. It is the lie angle that is most likely to change. Either way it is worth getting clubs of that quality fitted- if you don't you are immediately doing them an injustice.
