So having played for about 2 months now i am wondering when should I start looking at doing my handicap? Today I got round 13 holes at + 18 with a 10 on a par 5 and a 8 on a par 4. 6 shots lost from slicing my tee shot. Which was frustrating as I haven't done that in a while! my last full round I was +26 and again that included a couple of lost balls. ]

Also, today my app on my phone calculated my score as a stableford (not sure why) but it came at 12 for 13 holes with no handicap, was speaking to a friend who said if I was off 18 then my score over 13 holes would have been 20, I had a look at the results for the last role up at the club and the winner was on 19 points....surely I wouldn't of had more points that the winner after only 13 holes???

Thanks
Danny

That winning score of 19 could well of been a nine hole comp. Re Hcap get it done ASAP. No reason not to. The weather at the moment is about as good as it is going to get so that score is there. My first hcap was 27, it is now 20 it's has took 3 1/2 years to get that. You will be gutted if you get a good score and don't have an hcap.
re shooting 10's etc. Your not the first and won't be the last. Your score will come down

Never thought about the weather!! I better get looking into doing it ASAP. Weather this evening was perfect.

Go for it as soon as you can. Get your handicap and start entering comps.

The more you delay it the more you will kick yourself when you find out how enjoyable they are, especially if they are randomly drawn so you get to play with different people each week.

You will also find out very quickly that there are lots of golfers that aren't as good as you after playing for donkeys years.

Seeing as the max (proper comp ) hcap is 28 and you are clearly capable of shooting scores lower than that I would say there is no time like the present.

For initial hcap allocation they reduce scores down to doubles so you would have been +13 through 13 on your last round so there is nothing to worry about

Ah thats good to know, I have a lesson on Tuesday so I will ask about doing it then. I am on an academy membership so not sure I can enter competitions at the club. Although I may ask about playing in them but wont hand in a score card or be eligible for prizes etc. Just be a good experience of playing with others.

Danny

Thanks

Found that already when I have a tee time near to someone else and they ask if I want to go round together. When I say I am on the academy membership I usually get lots of 'advice' for the first few holes until I have hit it further and hit the fairway on the first 3 par 4s

Are you absolutely sure about your scores?

Your 10 on a par 5 and 8 on a par 4 equates to 9 over for those 2 holes. That means that for the other 11 holes to be only 9 over, you must have had the equivalent of 9 bogeys and 2 pars. You need to get 3 handicap cards in before you lose your touch.

score where for hole 4 4 10 6 3 8 7 3 3 7 5 5 4
The par for each hole 4 3 5 4 3 4 5 4 3 5 3 5 3

Great advice.

I was worried when I joined my club in Feb and soon realised that some of the member's that have been at the club for 20+ years are still chomping round mid 20's to 28. Find comps really enjoyable, get stuck in and meet people.

Get your handicap done asap. Monthly stablefords can be won by anyone, at any level - at ours somewhere around 4 under your handicap or 40 points is a winning score unless someone's has played a blinder!

If we manage to arrange a game next week I can mark a card for you might as well get that done asap this will be over 18 holes. The role up on a Thursday is always a 9 hole comp between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.

Cheers

Rick

My math may not be right but your mate may have being doing you an injustice, if off 18 you're score would have been 24pts I think.... or 17 over the first 9 only, with 2 dings which is good scoring. So not a winning score but in the ball park.

Worth bearing in mind that you may not have played from the same tees as the competition.

That's a good point, I always play off yellow tees but I presume comps will be off white tees. I better have a couple of rounds of the white tees before doing my handicap then, probably just and extra club in the par 3s which will be interesting cause one is 212 yards which I get to with my 4h and I get to the green but got nothing else to get the extra 10 yards or so
