Hi,

quick question , due to work I can not enter any comps at my club as they are only at weekend, hence I have a 24 h/c from 3 cards I handed in.

My aim for this season , apart from getting a lower h/c was to break 90. In my past 6 rounds on various courses my score has been between 82 and 88.

Can you still put these cards in to reduce your h/c or does it always have to be on comps ?(should I just make up a what I think the h/c should be and give that as my h/c?)

I don't always hit as well as the above score as people at Luton Hoo will tell you, however 24 in my opinion does not reflect how I am playing at the moment.

Cheers for help

If you hand the scorecards in to the club secretary he/she should adjust your handicap accordingly.

Cant you get 1 day off to play a comp while your still off 24? Would be an easy win for ya :D

it would be a nice idea :o but people may not be happy and it would not sit right with me.

Cheers

You could ask to be re-assessed on the basis of further evidence provided the cards are a) signed by a responsible person and b) over a measured course. It is the committees responsibility to ensure as far as possible that your handicap is a true reflection of your ability.

That said, the whole concept of handicaps is built around competition play, CSS, week on week adjustments and it's completely different playing in a comp to playing casually. So although you may feel you are playing better you will not know until you step onto the white tees with a card in your hand and do it "for real".

Midnight, you'll be pleased to know there is a section in congu that covers your situation

Clause 23.7 of the CONGU UHS states that 'In exceptional circumstances the Handicap Committee may adjust the handicap of a player in the period between Annual Reviews if there is compelling evidence that his Exact Handicap does not reflect his current playing ability'.

it goes on to give this example

A number of, probably three or more, good playing performances in Non Qualifying competitions by a player who otherwise may not participate with any regularity in Qualifying Competitions.

I read that to mean you can be cut off yellow tees as they have their own SSS and if thats where you play all your golf from, that is your REAL golf

Clause 23.7 :)

I totally agree with what you have said mate, but as my club does not run midweek comps, I think I am stuffed. I personally believe I would play worse in a comp at the moment , as I do not have any exp of them. However this is not going to change for quite a while.
Do you think entering my scores to a online site and then playing off that in meets/society, until I manage to enter some comps would be acceptable?

Cheers

The EGU have a system whereby you can become an associate member and get a handicap from them by sending in your scorecards. Unfortunately, you can only have an EGU handicap if you don't already have a club handicap, which you do. I don't knwo how any of these other sites work, the EGU one is the one I used to use.

I would suggest the best way is to get some cards together, take them to the h'cap secretary and explain your situation quoting rule 23.7 or whatever it is and get him to give you a cut.

Midnight, I don't think your handicap secretary will necessarily act on cards from other courses, ours I think does so only if it's in competition, tees and CSS are known.
what you could do is ask about supplementary cards - they can be used for just your situation, when you can't get enough competition cards in. We have to sign the book before the round, use a marked card, play off the whites, with a fellow member as marker (who doesn't have to be playing a supplementary).

If a 25 h/c player asks a handicap secretary to give him an 18 h/c because he feels that reflects his ability how can the secretary not immediately agree. What grounds could he possibly have for refusing.

I had the same problem Midnight. I did submit 3 more cards. they wouldn't cut me unless I played the comps ???????. I duly did and explained to playing partners that I had tried, most said fill your boots. I felt uncomfortable with it but got my cut. Now playing shi-ite :o

If said player can back up his claim with scorecards, duly signed, I fully agree.
And as I understand it, it doesn't matter what course they are from, what tees, or whether they are "competitive" rounds or not.
But no cards, no cut.

A cut from 'general Play' at your own course, I can understand.

But to hand in cards from 'other' courses isnt always acted upon. My own course for example is widely accepted to be at least 3/4 shots 'more difficult' than any others in my area, so they dont generally entertain non-comp cards handed in from rounds at others, or so I believe.
