Hi all

Have hit literally 100's of balls now on and off the course and my gapping is as follows and my 9 iron to 60 degree wedge worry me - any advice? These are carry distances (not total).

Whats the issue? Are you finding gaps on the course? Slightly bigger gap between the 8 and the 9 but not horrendous.

How many full shots do you play with your 60?

PW and 48 are quite close lofts but yardage difference seems fine but quite a big gap from 48-54. Maybe you could switch the 54 for a 52 or the 48 for a 50. Would need to work out which suits your yardage better.

For me, I never play full wedge shots so I don't find the gapping around them that meaningful but that could just be me.

How often does anyone hit a full shot with a 60 degree wedge?

For me, wedges are about having options for different types of shot, different bounce, different loft etc.

Distance gaps aren't something I worry about with my sand and lob wedge.

Driver aside, we hit the ball similar distances, but the thing that jumps out at me is your 17 yard gap between yr 8 and 9 iron. Have you had the loft checked in yr 9i ? I'd have expected you to be late 130's /140. Good numbers tho.

Hey Canary Yellow.

If your 48 degree club is bendable I would probably try moving it to 50 and the 54 to 55.

I would also experiment by making sure the 55 is half inch shorter than the 50 and the 60 is half inch shorter than the 55.

You our can also have some fun with lead tape if shortening the shaft makes a difference.

One final note I like to have the same kind of grip on all my clubs. I use Lamkin Crossline. Long lasting, inexpensive and great as I play in the hot desert with no glove.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm all good;-)

I tend to agree but am worried I am conforming to the 'norm' as opposed to what I am happy with

Wedges were purchased when I bought the M2's - PW was 44 and then the wedges went 48 54 60

Apex CF16 PW is 45 so the 48 seems close but the PW seems to be hitting stronger

I didnt know whether to continue or to sell the MD3's and have a complete refit where I would probably go 50-54-58 instead of my current 48-54-60

I don't like your wedge gaping. I use 4 deg between my wedges. 60 - 56 - 52 - 48.

I find this post pretty amusing for a few reasons. When do you ever hit your wedges full out - almost never. When do you ever have an exact yardage for a club. Are these numbers, hitting on a simulator, are they uphill, downhill, any wind? So many variables come into golf that it's pointless really closing your mind to how far a club should go. For example I play off 1 and know that flat calm at sea level I fly a pw 134 yards, however I can also hit it 145 if I hammer it or can hit it 100 if I want to. Down at the lower end of your bag it's more about feel. I only carry a 52 and 56 wedge. 56 goes 105. But wait why can I hit it any distance from 5 yards up to and above my normal full swing? Feel and practice. What's your handicap, what areas of your game could see the most significant improvement, I'd suggest working on these rather than worry about gapping as it really won't drop any shots off your game let's be honest. Get out and practice, i'm sure your ability to flight the ball and hit different yardage will improve alot if you put the effort in :)

Thanks for the comment

The distances have come from eight weeks of cold and warm play both on and off the course using GC2 and also Garmin g8 for measurement - yes I know the distances change due to the weather and due to the incline but I have I have a guide for myself somehow

Am a 26 handicap back to golf after a 20 year break - yes I can hit it a long way but never straight hence the weekly lessons right now

Clubs have been checked and are okay - I don't get the 9 iron or pw distances and the pro laughs as well but we are working on it!

Just feel I should have gone 52-56-60 and yes I do actually hit full wedges when I need to

I think your wasting your time thinking about this if you play off 26, your game obviously has more obvious issues which would benefit you 100fold by sorting out. As a 26 handicap you more than likely do not strike the ball consistently enough to rely on your distances if I'm honest, not being harsh but honestly do yourself a favour and get working on the real issues. If your pro is laughing, that says something lol you shouldn't really be hitting full out wedge shots as it puts too much spin on the ball, for example if I hit a full out 52 124 yards into a green it can have as much as 15 ft of spin on it which is not wanted so in that case I'd hit a 3/4 pw to get a lower flight which when it lands will skip once or twice and stop there rather than skipping and then spinning off a green or down a hill. You very rarely see professionals hit full wedge shots for this very reason, I am not a pro but a very good amateur ball striker
