Hi Everyone...

Ok, only had my Wilson Di9s (+1" and jumbo grips) as im 6'4" for 2 weeks now but they are so much better than my old clubs.

I havent played much in the past and I want to start from scratch so im lookin for some tips from you guys.

Im stickin with my short irons at the moment and was wonderring if this is a good idea for a few months or whether to go and get a 3 or 5 wood and start slowly smashing some shots?

Im on the range 2-3 times per week and im trying to play twice a week on short 9 holes.

Thanks for any advice :)

Personally I'd get a driver asap.

Lots of people use their short clubs, but then can't transfer that swing to the longer beast.

So, even if you don't use it on the course for a while, go out and get yourself a 12* ( or more ) regular shafted driver, and thwack away, my friend.

:)

Definately the best you can afford.

Having said that, there are plenty of bargains to be had on reputable online sites ( GM allow onlinegolf to advertise on their website, so I've always assumed they're ok ).

Look for old model Nike, Cobra, or even the Wilson staff Spine ( beware cheap Wilson's though - I have one, and there's a world of difference ).

If you're quick you can get a Nike SQ Sumo Square 5900 Driver 13* regular shaft for £79.99 ( If that's within your budget ).

It should see you ok for a while.

hello fellow tall person :)

i'd say at least get a 3 wood and learn to hit that. It'll do for now and will generally keep you in play out on the course more than a driver would and you can also use it from the fairway with much more ease.

i'd also say go and get at least a couple of lessons.

I started this game around 2 years ago and although i've invested in clubs over this time, i'd say that the most valuable thing i've paid for is lessons.

I think it's possibly harder for us tall folk to keep our long limbs under control, so take all the help you can get. Get lessons, stick with the coach/pro if you like them and you'll enjoy your golf so much more.

oh, and being taller doesn't necessarily mean that you need longer clubs.

:)

I did get fitted for these clubs and they seem to give me a lot better posture and I hardly fluff any shots.

Having trouble with my putter though, I think its too long or the lie angle is wrong, my hands are pretty past the end of the grip?

Do you have big hands by any chance, know of any gloves bigger than XL? I havent met anyone with bigger hands than me and I cant find a comfortable glove.

Thanks

hehe

I have played an awful lot of tennis in my day and that seems to help me with the wrist roll etc.

In fact im actually chipping tennis balls around the house at this very moment. Will be interesting to see how much golf I can squeeze in over these dark months ahead :(

I quite agree! I'm well over 6'4'' and everyone assumes my clubs must be considerably lengthened - in fact they only have about 1.5" added to the shafts.

That's not to say that a tall golfer shouldn't be custom fitted with clubs, as indeed everyone should. A tweak in the lie angle or an extra layer of tape beneath the grips can make a huge difference.

I recall having a lesson years ago - my clubs had been fitted, and the pro I saw could not believe what a shocking job the shop had made of them (major retailer, no name no pack drill) - I took them back, had them tweaked and the resulting improvement in my game was massive.

Ive got three layers of tape on my irons and a jumbo grip and I my fingers still interfere with the palm of my hand.

Im also having dificulty trying to keep my thumb where it should be as its so long!!

ONLY 1.5" that is considerably lengthened.

as with one manufacturers stiff shaft not being the same as anothers, i've found this to be true for glove sizing. Biggest i've found is XL. Nike seem to be made small, as are mizuno. Best fitting XL gloves i've had are footjoy or Srixon.

hope that helps.

I'm just over 6'4" by the way, and my clubs are only .5" longer. Makes a difference though. I also think 35" putters are too long and like the 34" i use.

lol .. yep 2 weeks :)

Ive just been the range again and I am finding that my thumb joint and now my wrist joint are slightly aching.

Do you reckon im over playing or am I just scuffing the matt too much!
I am a lefty and its my right thumb and wrist which are aching, but that is my weak side by far!

PS will try a new glove also, thanks for that.

So, as well as being unfeasibly tall and having hands like shovels, you're a leftie?? Did you murder someone in a previous life?? :D :D :D

Yeah its a bit of a bummer, I dont know how I cope sometimes... :P

The local range also only has 2 left handed matts and one of them is crap so im already feeling a bit unwanted... and

...the only left handed clubs in any shops seem to be purple and pink ladies clubs hehe!!
