Hi guys
Ive already just started playing after 4-5 years off
So far ive only been going to range up to now and 9 holes on course
Ive been getting very painful muscles especially in my right arm (i'm left-handed)
Would this be normal after a long lay off?

Yes mate that's perfectly normal. It's doms (delayed onset muscle soreness) your body is adapting itself to the golf swing. Your strengthening the muscles without realising it. The pain is just the muscle repairing itself. Don't over do it though as if the tendons start to hurt you could end up with a long spell not playing. Try warming up before you hit the range or course and make sure you stretch which is really important as it gets all the muscle fibres loose and firing. Make sure your getting enough good food to, lots of good meat and veg for the protein and vitamins.

Is it your bicep, tricep, forearm or shoulder? Also is it a dull ache deep in the muscles or a sharp acute pain? How is your range of movement both when swinging and the next day or two when the pain is at it's worst?

I get tennis elbow in my left arm, I play right handed so it is the equivalent arm. It is a beggar to get rid off so don't over do the golf and bring that on. I grip the club too tightly which doesn't help so make sure you don't strangle the life out of your clubs. Practise but don't stay out for hours hitting ball after ball. Build up the practise rather than go mad.

It appears to go if i dont play for a couple of days
the pain appears to be dull and upper arm mainly but all over and goes up as far as my shoulder
i guess i'm using muscles i haven't used in a while and my body is telling me?

Yeah that is exactly right, the dull ache is caused by hundreds of tiny tears in the muscle tissue as they are used and grow. You can ice your upper arms and shoulders each day which helps repair the damage much faster and reduces the pain and swelling. Ice then heat (warm shower or heat pad) then ice again (repeat again if you have the time). Take a day off after each practice session and ice/heat/ice again then after two and then once or twice per week.

Hope that helps
