Hi all

as the title says. Should I go straight into the qualifying handicap rounds?

my reservations are that I don't fully know all the rules. And I want to get the best handicap I can so if I waited a few weeks then I would know the course better and hopefully with playing more be able to score better.

also do I need to play with a club member for the 3 rounds? If so anyone had any problems experience of arranging these

you will need to have your cards signed by someone approved by the committee, which usually will be other members, personally would ask the best way for you to arrange them when you join and just get them done (club should help you find people to play with to do so), dont worry about what handicap you get its just a start point to allow you to enter comps etc and if youre better than you get you will soon come down

when I got my first handicap the club were helpful and I simply played in a few comps and put those cards in. As for the rules, dont worry about it half the people you'll play with dont know them either, or they tell you BS ones,

check out the r&a rules quick guide, it has the most usual things you'll come accroos and what to d.. water, unplayable, lost ball etc.

Thanks - sounds like I just need to get stuck in

good read on the rules. I knew more than I thought - maybe the application will be a little getting used to. No more friendly drops

if in doubt take a provisional... no one likes the walk of shame : )

I've just been through this. Was able to play in the weekly competitions and use the first 3 cards for my handicap. Re the rules, I'm wasn't too sure either, so I asked PPs for help who were happy to oblige.

just be aware that there are many myths still being pedalled around.

I'm in the process of reactivating my h/c at a new club. I toyed with the idea of playing a few rounds first but then thought stuff it. I've played two comps and I suspect I'm going to go up a shot first but my target is to get to 18 by the end of the year, a drop of 4-5 shots. Just get stuck in and what happens happens.

In terms of rules, if in doubt ask your playing partners. If still in doubt play the hole how you think and ask people in the clubhouse afterwards before signing the card and entering it onto the computer, if your club has that. Don't be afraid to stand your ground. If you read the rules section on this forum you will see how many myths there are about rules and how often people are wrong. My own experience is that apart from one bloke, who was a total pain in terms of rules, most people are not looking to ruin your day by picking up on minor infringements. They are just out to enjoy a round.

Does the club have regular roll up groups that play at the same time each week? If so, try and get involved in these for a few weeks (and meet a few members and play the course a few times) and then ask them to mark handicap cards and after that get involved in the comps. To be honest I wouldn't worry about getting the "best" handicap you can. Just get the cards in and then try to get the handicap down.

I got my handicap by finding out when one of the roll ups take place and joining that for three weeks. Great way to meet some of the members and once I explained that I needed the cards for my initial handicap they were more than willing to help.

Same for me........you will find that members are very welcoming towards new members. Good luck and don't worry about your initial handicap....it will com down if it's too high (or like me, go up if it's too low!)

thanks all - appreciate all the help/advice

Never been a member of a club before so looking forward to it just a bit apprehensive about the processes.

Roll ups sound good - a good way to meet people. I work full time so hopefully there will be some available evenings/weekends

My club is working hard to make sure new members are fully integrated included access to roll ups (especially weekends) and we now have a buddy system where a committee member/established member acts as a contact point for a few months (and a playing partner) to guide newbies through playing in comps (how to enter, signing into the system on the day/paying the cash, entering scores in the computer and putting cards in) and getting handicaps

That's a brilliant idea. I joined a club 2 years ago in Herts and I said I was worried about roll ups etc, in the end I didn't have the balls to just roll up on my own and didnt rejoin, something like this would have helped me massively.
