It looks like I will be moving to Aberdeen this year and need to join a club - or at least play golf somewhere.

I played Kings Links - Balnagask and Hazlehead No 1 last year, thought KL and HH were great, didn't like the blind shots at Balnagask.

I see that these are all public courses with golf clubs attached so KL and HH are a possibility.

Any of you guys from the area or can anyone recommend any course in the area worth a try ?

PS . I play on a parkland course at the mo and do like links golf.

Im not in the area so can't give advice on any of the clubs in and around there, but if i were moving to Aberdeen i would be looking to join; Royal Aberdeen, Murcar or Cruden Bay.

Will you be staying in Aberdeen or outside the city? There are some cracking courses north of the city - Murcar/Cruden Bay are top notch, and I think Newburgh on Ythan is well rated too and some really friendly smaller clubs around - I was a member at Alford for years - lovely club and nice wee course.

I like the Kings Links a lot, gets a lot of people walking across it having parked at the Beach though - in the summer of 92 I used to sneak on for a few holes when the starter knocked off at 8pm (I was staying in digs in the city at the time) - Played one night when Aberdeen were at home - top of my backswing on the first tee and they scored - never heard anything as sudden and loud on a golf course - not my best drive.

Can't really go wrong with any well (or little!) maintained links course imo!

For Parkland, though a bit out of town, Newmacher is pretty good - only played the Hawkstone of the 2 courses. And Meldrum House has a top reputation too.

Plenty for every budget - perhaps even an occasional visit to Trumps place!

Depends where you are in town, I think you can get a council pass to play balnagask, kingslinks and hazlehead 1&2 for something like £300 for the year, the other muni Auchmill is now run privately I think.
Other than that Portlethen is a nice course, murcar is greaq if hard!, Newmacher is good just north of Dyce, Ellon just 20 mins up the road is good as is Newburgh on ythan. Cruden bay is probably to far as its 25 miles away.
Royal Aberdeen and Trump probably out of most peoples pocket.
If your out to the west, westhill is not a bad track, and deeside is a cracker but expensive.

too far Aberdeen to Cruden Bay surely but a cracking course. Brother was member of Murcar so have played it a few times - another cracker - but HH#1 I played and enjoyed.

You can get the council pass for £335 a year which covers the courses Shewy mentions. If you can go for that, you can then join one of the clubs attached to these courses - I'm a member at Bon Accord at the Links, pay something like £50 or £60 a year and that lets you play in all the competitions and use the club facilities.

Plenty of good courses close to Aberdeen but membership fees will vary so depends how much you want to pay.

I'm a member at Newburgh, it's a decent course. Depends what kind of golf you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend, what side of the city you will be living on. There are plenty options on all sides. Happy to provide you with any further info.

Thanks guys. We don't have a house at present but since I'll be working in the city think it will need to be pretty central to avoid the traffic nightmare.
Would ideally like to be at the course in less than 15 mins in the evening or early Sat / Sun mornings from the house.

Current fees are £740. Not bothered whether links or parkland , like both.

There have been some suggestions I'll have a closer look at .

Thanks.

if it has to be withing 15 mins of your work in the city centre i would suggest you need to just pick the course that you can walk to in 15 mins, as my exp of driving anywhere in and around Aberdeen can be summed up in one word;

GRIDLOCK! :)

Early Saturday and Sunday you can be almost anywhere in 10/15 minutes. We live on the north side of the city and are at Newburgh in that time. Going south you could be at Portlethen in that time. You certainly have many options. Parkland, Newmachar probably your best choice but it's absolutely mobbed for weekend medals from talking to friends who play there, although there are two courses and if you choose to join both then you will have several medals a week. Links, I'm biased but you could do worse than Newburgh. Medals or stableford every Tuesday and Sunday and medals every Saturday. Good luck finding somewhere.
