Hi everyone,

new to the forum and would welcome any comments on the following.
I have just started a year long block of lessons with the teaching pro at my course. The lessons paid up front consist of one lesson a month for the next year.
Has anyone else taken a similar package and how did they work out ?

cheers

I get a lesson/swing check once a month from my pro. It helps to stop any bad habits developing. I have been for the last three years.

i dont know if someone else paid 4 your lessons or you won them in a comp, however if not,i cant believe you paid up front anything could happen 2 either of you,he cud also leave, why should anyone have your money 4 a year earning interest when it cud be working 4 you, utter madness

Started playing in August with a block of seven lessons due to be completed in December. As a newbie having lessons more frequently has certainly helped. Will probably move to one a month in the new year.

A lot probably depends on your pro's teaching style but mine is great at helping me iron out one thing at a time. My only suggstion is don't let too much time go by between swing check ups. My pro was away for a few weeks then I had a putting lesson and it was about 7 weeks in the end between swing lessons and I'd developed really bad habits.

Yeah, they're a great idea. I used to buy blocks of 4 lessons for the price of 3 and use them over a couple of months, probably nearly a dozen lessons a year.

I have to put this year's slump in form down to the fact I only got one lesson this year after a gap of ten months and all the bad habits had crept back in, ball position, posture, swing plane probs etc.

Hoping to afford a few over the winter to get sorted again. They're worth every penny in lost golf balls alone...and sheer enjoyment when you hit top form and feel as if you can trust your swing. It's all about confidence over the ball.

Hi,

Thanks for all your comments, most people have been positive about the idea of having the pro look over your swing and iron out bad habits.

I have set myself a plan until the end of next season and with the aid of the lessons hope to come down from 17.7 at present to around 14. As John said when the pro changes something, even slightly, then you hit a good shot the confidence just starts to flow.

Some commented that paying upfront was a bit much, but I shall explain. The pro is fairly new to the club and looking to build up a book of teaching clients. He offered on half hour lesson a month for the next year for £99, which is really good value. The incentive for me is I have paid for this and need to keep it going to get my handicap cut. After all I couldn't buy much with £1.50 of interest anyway !!
He has been really good in the lessons I have had so far and we are hopefully playing a few holes to gether on Thursday (weather permitting). This would be outwith the lesson structure but gives him a chance to see me on the course.

Does anyone have specifics in terms of the make up of ongoing lessons or is it generally a check up exercise ?

Cheers

I have one lesson remaining in the current package, which comprised an on course assessment (he'd never seen me play) and 3 lessons (pitching, chipping and next bunker) - tells a story doesn't it! Once this set is over I plan to re-up - maybe a package of four or another 3 + course.

the real difficulty is finding somewhere dry to practice between lessons!

Now is a great time to start with lessons. It gives you the winter to get used to any changes in your swing so you can start the new season with confidence. :)

Viscount, I've always considered an on course assessment. Did you find it beneficial?

Sneds, go for it.
If your pro sees you play on the course, he will see your strengths and weaknesses and be able to help you in the areas you need the most help
Also, he should be able to show you how to hit a variety of shots around the greens.

I'm looking forward to my teaching pro moving to Maidenhead soon. He wants to play more (his words) and so I'm hoping I might blag a few freebie rounds and some on course tuition. I have some brownie points with him as he's got some new business from here and been mentioned in a couple of online dispatches.

I think its important to assess your game in its entirity with your teacher. Its no fun working on the long game and full swing all the time unless there are fundamental problems that clearly need fixing first. I love the short game lessons especially once I've been shown the new techniques or had my faults corrected and a few challenges and the odd side bet come into play.

If you are serious about lessons it might be worth having a look at this and maybe getting your pro to fill it in with you.
