I've had one lesson ever. It was when I had a case of what seemed to be the terminal s*anks. I could seem to do it with almost every club. One notable example being a 5 wood! Honestly.

The day before the lesson on the range I managed to s*ank 40 from about 50. I was almost suicidal as I had been in the grip of this hell for upwards of 3 months and was about to sell my clubs and take up jigsaw puzzling.

During the lesson I hit every ball well and not a s*hank to be seen! I wasn't cured as it still was there for quite some time (but maybe one per round) and even now 10 years later the odd one pops up.

So what the blimming heck was that all about. My Pro scratched his head laughed and said that he couldn't see me doing anything wrong.

I was impressed with him though. He must have exerted some kind of spiritual power over them and exercised the demon from my game without showing me anything.

Spooky

a strange tale indeed :mmm:

Thing is that it's more or less true.

Don't think I would go back to a Pro that couldn't see what was causing the ......:mmm:

When I was having the lesson he said "OK hit some shots with a 9 iron". And I did and they were all fine or certainly acceptable, hence he couldn't 'see' me doing anything wrong. The 40 out of 50 had happened the day before when I was on the range on my own.

It was the oddest thing and I still don't how or why it happened.

The illness started when we were away on a three day break and I had never had a s*ank previously. I didn't know what they were and that there was a term for them back then. I was 80 yards or so from a green and played an approach which went off at 45 degrees to the right. I then played from there and that one did the same. But after that it was all back to normal. But oddly the next day on the same hole from almost the same position I did the same thing again.

The more I play golf the more it becomes madly mysterious at times.

 the mystery thickens

I had the same problem the early months of last year. I could be 150yds from green, in middle of fairway after tee shot and would end up that my first putt would see me playing 10. You know what went on inbetween.

Went to my Pro. He told me to hit 6 shots - I hit 6 of them in succession. But he had spotted immediately what I was doing and showed me what to do to fix it. And today? If I am careless or try something clever - I'll do it - 100% certain. Every time. If I take care to do what I was told I don't - simple. Bit of a pain as I have to concentrate on doing the 'right thing' EVERY shot - rather eliminating any 'clever-dick' thoughts I might have over playing fancy shots (which might be a good thing as it happens). Hopefully this year I may not have to concentrate quite so much and get a bit of imagination back into my game.

The unmentionables are indeed a strange, but hopefully NOT incorrigible, beast.

The Pro should be able to see in your swing what might cause them though, even if you didn't hit any in front of him. I am assume you were not just aiming out of the heel.;) I have been known to socket the ball, because I now realise after a lesson I have a hip thrust on my downswing. This causes the club handle to rise and move away from my body. Ultimately to socket a ball you must be moving the heel further away from you during the swing.

Might be worth having a lesson though, just to make sure there is not an obvious faulty in your swing.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me.

The cause (or solution of you will) was just the focus of the lesson, being there took me back to what we did on previous lessons and I did not replicate the fault as I did not replicate the situation that caused them.

We just worked instead on what I was doing right rather than trying to fix the problem, which resulted in them being worked out the game.

I hit a couple today....not during the testing! I know why I do it though and my teaching pro can see it immediately if I tell him I've had a few. Thing is, especially on the course get, one and it becomes russian roulette on every shot after that as to whether it'll happen again. It's that lack of confidence I find does the most damage to my scores as I then fail to commit

He's not much of a pro then.

FWIW, I still hit the od shank. Maybe a couple a year, I don't worry too much about it as it's always a one off.
