I started watching the cherry and whites playing Wasps to see a Gloucester player sent off in the first minute.

Totally killed the game from the start.
If Gloucester had been deducted 12 points [in the game] and allowed to replace the player we may have seen a decent game.
Same kind of scenario with football.

Any mileage do you think?

Whereabouts in the rules of rugby or football does it say "if a serious foul is committed early in the game which might affect the overall spectacle, then the referee shall let the offending player get away with it?"

I said to replace the player, he would not get away with it as the other team would be awarded 12 points in rugby or 2 penalties in football [for instance].

Big crowd, millions watching on telly and the game is ruined in the first minute by one players stupid actions.

Is this the football equivalent of starting a round with a treble bogie?

I don't mind if a player gets sent off... good chance of some goals!!!

I don't think that approach would serve any purpose, plus it would need to be a lot more than 12 pts to give the team any real penalty from foul play.

And for the record, what Nick Wood did was inexcusable and we as supporters are very disappointed by what was an out of character occurrence. Woodie is usually a very professional player and a thoroughly decent bloke, plus he's a real team stalwart.

Finally, just to be pedantic, it was Saracens, not Wasps.

Hda
I'm always getting Wasps, Saracens and Quins muddled.
Do they not recon that a yellow card in International rugby generally equates to an 8 point loss.

I've not really heard that before. My point is that to go down to 14 men is more damaging to a team than losing 12 points but keeping 15 players. Also, what of the situation where the leading team is say 20 points ahead, they can then afford a 'red card incident' and still be 8 pts ahead.

BTW, Wood has been given an 8 week ban.

I am thinking more about the value [entertainment/money] for the spectators when a player is sent off early.

Remember the English ref who sent a player off in the first minute of a football World Cup final.
Brave decision, but it totally spoiled a massive game.

Making the guy who was hooked to replace Wood sit down beside him on the subs bench was interesting. Some serious body language moments there.

Its often the equivalent, for me, of going to a gig and the lead guitarist hits a bum note and is told to leave the stage. They can still carry on but someone who has paid £60 for a ticket gets lower quality entertainment. I also feel that, in football, 2 yellow cards equal a red is daft. I think that a booking for two bad fouls could warrant dismissal but to be sent off for taking a shirt off and then kicking a ball away 20 minutes later is nonsense and possibly yellow cards could be graded so some dismissals need three yellows.

Only mileage in that for me would be that it would encourage more diving or other simulation in an effort to gain an advantage, it's bad enough as it is thanks.

I could go with a yellow, orange & red system, 3 yellows or 1 yellow & 1 orange and you're off, straight red still applicable to the most serious offences, although I'm not sure the current crop of referees could cope with it; indeed it could become an easier way for some of them to bottle out of decisions.

As to the yellow for the shirt off, is there a more ridiculous offence in football? Mrs BiM says it should be compulsory for Frank Lampard to remove his shirt when he scores, reckons it ruins her enjoyment........ ;)
