Just wanted to see how much people think they should be paying for membership? There are some posts on here regarding the closure of courses and if they close I imagine the fees at the remaining clubs will go up. Is there an amount you would never go over for a years Golf?

Will depend on the course and location

Happy to pay a couple grand a year if it gives quailty golf courses to play on

Financially I would say that my barrier is set at £1000.00 a year tops. If it went to that then I would then consider whether it was worth it. After all, I get to play once or twice a week tops with the odd 9 holes after work in the summer. Once the subscription hit 4 figures I would have to seriously consider whether it was worth it or whether it was time to find another hobby. I know that for some down South then £1000.00 is a bargain but around me most clubs charge around the £650.00 mark.

Alternatively, I would head to the local 9 hole course at Sudbrooke. The membership is cheap as chips, the course is decent enough, the people friendly and it would allow me to scratch my golfing itch without breaking the bank.

Location is everything regarding this question. In Northumberland the better parkland courses are between £500-£600. You get a freak like Close House which is around £1800 or so I believe, mainly because they want corporate clients not individual members, but otherwise if a club up here charged £800 then it would have no members. I have played a decent amount of golf in N. Yorkshire where there are some lovely courses. Average there seems to be £750-£800 and if I lived in that area I would deem that to be okay as that just happens to be the cost to play golf in that part of the world. I doubt I could justify over £1,000 but that is because it is so far over what I currently pay.

depends where you are, My club is the most expensive members club within 100 miles , but is still peanuts compared to a course down south.

You wont get much change if any out a grand for a decent course in the north west.

Theres plenty cheaper but mostly because they are goat tracks.

All depends on what quality of course you want. I know I could play at a course that is only decent in summer or a crap layout etc.

Depends on earnings/disposable income IMO, so different for each person, depending on their circumstances.

i currently pay nearly 1200 per year, but if my disposable income was twice as high or half as much, I would probably cut my cloth accordingly.

I personally think £6/700 a year is more than enough any more and it wouldn't be worth joining for me

I've barely used my membership this year and I only paid £599 for that, goes up to £760 next year

Well - I am just renewing. We are changing our membership year to align with the tax financial year - so my renewal this time will take me to end March 2016. My invoiced amount for that 17 months golf is £2126 - eeek! But that will be consistent what everyone pays to be a member of a good and established members club in the Hampshire/Surrey/Berkshire area. If that's the golf and type of club and membership I want - that's what I have to pay.

The good news is that my golf from 1st November 2015 to 31st March 2016 is going to be the same cost as 1st Nov 2014 to 31st Oct 2015 - excellent news that we have been able to do that. But still a might whack and I only earn a fairly ordinary professional wage - so dear everyone not golfing in this part of the world - rejoice when your subs are half of mine :)

almost 1500 a year. ouch

I think ours will go up again this year so closer to £700 now, but that's for a championship links that's held the walker cup among others.

The is also talk that Royal Dornoch will be above £500 this year as well;)

this isn't necessarily true

over the last 30 years there were a lot of courses built because demand outstripped existing supply, and was increasing strongly. the increase in the number of courses didn't drive down the costs/fees at all. there's no logic to the reverse either because most clubs could currently accommodate more members rather than visitors if (big if) they can find a way to match the available tee slots to membership demand (and many are bringing in increasingly complex structures to facilitate this).

there's also the obvious - if demand existed to support increased fees then the courses wouldn't be closing!

Ours is €800 a year , if you introduce a new member for €500 on the new membership drive scheme , then yours is also €500 for next year .. luckily i did this ..
Plus i have a €60 GUI voucher for runner up in OOM comp which i can use so im currently down to €440 .

If you win a voucher in our winter league you can use that off your membership , so hopefully pick up at least 1 over the winter
