It was the first round of our club championship today and I was feeling pretty good after some encouraging practice rounds lately, and keen to make up for last year's last place finish.

It didn't start off pretty. I put my first tee shot into the water then hooked that drop out-of-bounds, finished up with a quad 8. Bogeyed the next 6 and doubled 8 & 9 to reach the turn with a 14 over par 51. Not looking good. I'd struggle to break 100 like this.

Bogeyed 10 and then finally got a par on 11, and then just went crazy. Parred the next 6 and only dropped a shot on 18 after a slightly careless tee shot ended up in a drainage ditch that runs parallel to the last fairway as a lateral hazard. Out in 51, back in 37, to not only break 100 but 90 too, leaving me 1 under overnight.

And in keeping with what I said in a recent post, I'm not going to worry about what could have been, but just remember how good it felt to keep pumping out those pars on the back 9

not all that unusual. Poor front 9, nothing to lose on the back 9 so you relax and hit good shots. I have had some crazy diferences over the years.

I do it regularly. I either start like a train and come home in an ambulance or play like a right wally going out and back under full sail, usually when its way too late. If I could find a way to combine the two I'd be laughing, either with a low score or manically with a cricket score

I dont know of any club championship where you shoot 88 and you are 1 under , most if not all club championships are scratch scores only to count .///////////////////............EYG

Yeah, I do this quite often. Tend to improve later in the round once I've made some swing alterations when necessary.

The other week I was +5 after 3 I think (think I was still half asleep or something) and finished +4. Crazy round.

All club championships I know are scratch....Anyway, two halves, Only last week at Dunbar Medal, off the back boards, I shot 44 for the first nine and if the clubhouse was anywhere near I would have walked. Back nine, 34 shots. That's level par with three bogies as well. I honestly don't know how I do it sometimes.

Not quite true anymore
Our Club Championships just finished both with a gross and net champion. They went from having an entry list of about 10 to 80 it was a great weekend. Also gives the lesser skilled golfers a chance to get their name on the elusive winners board.
Good luck today!!! Relax and let it go

We have a gross and net prize. It's the gross that's the champ (as it should be). Two rounds of similar fortunes (net 75 and 73 or +5, +3) with a double on the first both days, and two killer holes. Always next year and it seemed 99% of the field had the same issues.

We have a gross club champion and a HC Champion - allows everyone to have a chance of winning something
