I'm looking for some older heads to help me make a decision. Basically, i'm on the cusp of being offered a cracking job, which will enable me to travel the world, look after my family and have some terrific career prospects.I've worked my nuts off to get this far in my career so quickly, i manage a business at the age of 32 and have all but been offered this position. Basically pressure and long hours go hand in hand with the position, which i'm happy putting up with.

BUT

I also have a chance of working within the golf industry at management level, but with less career prospects, less money but obviously i'd be dealing with something i'm passionate about. I haven't been offered this position yet but i may have to cross the bridge. So, my head tells me travel the world, earn the money, progress, and my heart tells me golf for a living.

I really am torn in 2 directions. At my age i'm inclined to think career opportunities come first, and perhaps i can join the golf industry having further boosted my CV credentials. There's another part of me wondering if i'll ever get such a good chance to be involved with golf and be paid for it again.

No-one can make this decision for me but i'd appreciate thought from those with a little more "life experience" or "auld yins"

For me the family, security etc comes first. Working in golf changes your hobby and I wonder if it would dampen your enthusiasm for the game eventually - you don't tell what sort of job it is

Its your choice mate, all I will add is that I worked away from home for 5 years, missed out on a lot of things with my 2 daughters growing up. Been working close to home for last 2 years, girls are now 9 and almost 7, I have a wee boy who is 2 and a half, and it is fantastic being here every night to kiss them all goodnight, makes me realise what I missed.
Good luck what ever you decide, I am sure it will work for the best.

If it's within a Golf Club then I'd take the other option,if it is something different to Golf Club Management itself then it depends on what it is so I really couldn't comment without knowng but at the moment with the way things are with me I would be off like a shot to option number 1.

Hope that helped?!;)

It's a management role in a well known golf store! Money's better than i thought it would be to be honest. Similar to what i'm on but without the hassle. The other one would involve taking the family with me, which i think would be great fro my wee boy when he's older

Granters, You are only 32, Personally I would go travel, If you can handle the pressure and long hours ,go for it, You will know when the time is right to settle down , Years ahead of you yet, Go enjoy yourself, Work hard then reap the benefits, Good Luck with what you achieve !!!

Honestly?? I'd go.

I would bet that working within golf will knock the enthusiasm you have for your hobby, as it is just now, out of you.

It has me......big time, and that's only in the space of 5 years,in fact it did after 18 months, don't get me wrong I still love the game and enjoy a knock with pals but the whole way I look at the sport has changed big time for the worse, christ knows how I'll be come 2020!!:)

What a fantastic opportunity option 1 is! At 32 will you ever get the chance again?

Even if you are only do it for 5-10 years It'll be a great life experience with all the financial benefits.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of good advice on here but the one you really should be talking to is your good lady wife.

If you have her blessing then the "World is your oyster" as they say.

Thanks chaps, in the space of 10 minutes that's really cleared my mind up. Really appreciate the input. Onwards and upwards, America here we come!

Where in America? In the right location there'll be better opportunities to play golf on some of the worlds greatest courses and have the weather to suit.

No question, go travelling with the family. They will benefit from the experiences as much as you will and I only wish I had a similar opportunity for mine

My wife is a true gem, she just wants whatever i decide is best for me. I'll have the opportunity to work in America, Europe , Asia and Australia and a real diverse career. I've beaten literally hundreds of people to get this far and been working 70 hour weeks for the last year to get myself in this position. It would be terrific to give my boy the opportunity to experience different cultures. I'll be based in Scotland for at least a year anyway

I'm glad i posted this, it makes sense now, would be stupid to throw it all away .

Thanks again everyone

With the current decline in Golf Club membership and fewer people playing the sport I would be reluctant to get involved in Golf retail. Also the increase of online retailing, most large outlets seem to be feeling the pinch. You don't say whether the job is performance related or not, but I think I would be looking at option 1.

The company have a presence in every single American state, i can't say who they are yet but it depends what i chose to specialize in over the next 18 months. It's a technical specification job. I will be working on various things from windfarm technology, solar power systems, construction support and fixing systems. I can also branch into the research and development side should i chose

go for it youve nothing to lose and the wee one is to young to let it bother him. i will have to scout about for a doubles partner next year. (we could have had it all lol)

Go for it , having moved to NZ 5 years ago it's looking likely that we will move back to UK as HID is missing family too much. So as you can take yours with you go for it, if our family could move here we'd not be contemplating going back
