so on sunday we play this months society in almost unbareable heat, and to be fair with a storming consistant front nine, but a well below average back nine i come in with 33 points and the longest drive in the bag (by miles). the first 2 groups are in and im clear in front by a good 5 points as alot struggled with the heat.

as you can imagine at this point im working out who is left that is most likely to give me a run for my money, when the last group finally come in ive tied with someone else, who after checking the cards has beat me on count back.

Now on normal occasions i would have been more than happy with longest drive & 2nd, but the fact is the guy who one on count back has picked up a nickname due to the fact he's scores are sometimes questionable.

* the sort of guy that throws a ball deep in to woods yet still bogeys a par 4

* the sort of guy that hits a penta off the tee yet finishes the hole with a topflight.

has anyone else even been in the position of having to deal with a defeat knowing the guy who won is relaxed about the rules (a nice way of putting it) or am i just sour!

As you were'nt in the group with him, you cant question a thing can you ?

If no-one playing with him has accused him, you came 2nd, end of.

Thats why I wouldnt play in a society with players without official 'handicaps'.

If you cant trust everyone you play with to play properly, why play with them at all ?

it sucks, but the more i play this game, the more i realise that there's a hell of a lot of folk playing it that no where near as honest as the rule book would suggest they should be.

We're only on this planet for a short time and i've decided that apathy is the best way to deal with cheats. i play the game because i enjoy it and i'm not going to let the morons change that.

I should probably care more (as i've been robbed in similar circumstances before), but if i did care more i probably wouldn't play the game.

Unfortunately, at our level, golf is not the honest game that it should be.

I had kind of the same thing on Sunday.

A group of 9 of us went to Romanby in Northallerton for a 27 hole special, there was a guy off 3, me and a few others off between 13 & 18 and then 4 guys off 28.

One of the guys off 28 said it was only his 3rd round of golf and had only been playing for 6 weeks, yet on the morning he won the 9 holes with 22 points, bagged the 2's comp with a birdie at a 179yd par 3, then in the afternoon's 18 holes comp he won with 48 points, bagged the closest pin on a 168yd par 3 over water and when I had a look at his card, he didnt have a single blob and had no worse than a gross 7 on his card of which there was only 1!

S.I 1 he par'd for 4 points for crying out loud!!!

Was I bitter that I came 2nd with 35 points to an out & out bandit? Damn right

as i said maybe im just sour, but when 4 other people in the of 12 have said " is a genuine" i think it answers itself.

Slugger, im the same as you, i can l;ook at my 33 points with a clear mind knwoing i sweated my B@lls of for them ;)

Keefg:, sorry but in your position i would have destroyed he's card... and almost certainly he's clubs too. By the sounds of it your course was pretty demanding, and to be 2 points shy of 50 is outragous. that handicap would have 10 off it for the next round!

Sorry oddsocks you do sound sour you came second take it like a man,no one likes losing but how you react to losing is the key.You can either moan and call the winner a cheat or you can come back fighting next time. Also its a society day so surely the charity is the winner.

poker, to be fair i wasnt that bothered, i was more happy to be out playing, i suppose in a way others planted the seed when they questioned the card being genuine.

Its ok ive took it like a man, ordered he's trophy and moved on, but the inspriation for the next round is building, and im also pairing up with him and two other committee members to ensure marking is correct. thing is there is a level of players in our society from 36h/c(we have done this is they are total beginners) through to single figure players.

Range time + course time + more focused on the back nine = WINS!

For crying out loud......... :D

This isn't even the "bandit with 45 points" type of thread. Neither of you played to handicap did you

If you want to win, play better next time and stop whinging :D ;)
