A Question About Club Championships

Good evening everyone.

I've joined the forum because I've been tasked with proposing a change to the club championships at my club (Taunton & Pickeridge in Somerset).

Part of that proposal would involve finding out a few aspects of how other clubs run their own championships and I wonder if it would be OK to ask this here as a very new member.

I'm just after some basic information on formats and timings really, but before I even ask I wanted to check that this would be an appropriate thing to do.

Kind regards
Steve

Hello and welcome.

There was a thread fairly recently covering lots of club champs I'm sure people will list in due course but if you use the advanced search you'll find the thread and info a lot quicker.

Nothing wrong with asking. I play at Enmore but live 10 mins from pickeridge our championship is 36 hole medal held on a Sunday . Max handicap 18 main comp is best gross but net prizes also. Have the TV in club house hooked up to the computer in office and scores are posted as and when they come in. Higher handicaps out 1st better players out last. Works well.

OK, well as it seems asking won't be a problem then I shall do so.

(I did find this thread: http://forums.golf-monthly.co.uk/sh...lub-championship&highlight=club+championships but lots of the posts are quite specific enough, and I'm not sure it's appropriate to borrow information from that thread as it wasn't ever intended for me)

Anyway... what I'd like to know, from anyone who doesn't mind replying is whether your club championships take place over one or two days, and if they take place over two days, are they consecutive weekend days or split over two weekends?

I'd also be interested in whether players are given randomly chosen tee times or whether the lower handicappers go first/last.

Finally, is there a cut that takes place after the first round or does everyone entering play in both rounds?

That's all really, I do hope that nobody minds me joining to ask these questions and please be assured that all replies are very much appreciated.

Thanks again
Steve

Our men's champs is 36 holes over a weekend. Drawn in handicap order. Low guys play first on the Saturday and last on the Sunday. I think the draw for the leaders (gross) on Sunday is adjusted according to position - leaders last.

No cut as there is a nett prize in each division too.

Hi there,

my my club championship is a 36 hole scratch strokeplay competition for the top 60 players at the club which means a cut off point of Hcap around 6. The lowest Hcap players go out last which is obviously along the lines of a PGA tournaments last 2 rounds.

Hope that helps.

Ours is 36holes gross 1 day, max h/cap 12. With set times starting in h/cap order and staying in same groups for both rounds.
Played on Saturday same day as most of our comps

This is very helpful, a big thanks. I'll say thanks again when I feel that I've received a good selection of replies. Could those who play their champs on just one day let me know if it's a Saturday or Sunday please.

Kind regards
Steve

Two 18 hole Medal rounds on Saturdays two weeks apart. No handicap limit, and random tee times. Lowest 16 gross scores over the 36 holes then enter scratch matchplay phase , seeded according to the medal score. These ties take place at stipulated times on consecutive days, culminating on a finals day when the 'B' champs, ladies champs, seniors champs finals are all also played.

this is how we have evolved ours too

day 1 is handicap order

day 2 is day 1 gross performance (ie similar to day 1, but with the top 15 nett scores also seeded into it.

the reason for us is that this is one of 2 competitions where there is a playoff in the case of a tie (for both nett and gross competitions)

Would it not be better to ask your own members who are actually going to be playing?

What do you do now and why is there a need for change?

Method 1

36 hole medal with cut after 18. Played over 2 days of weekend.

Drawn for round 1 by handicap, paired by gross score. for 2nd round.

Method 2

Over complicated medal qualifier system followed by long winded knockout where everyone loses interest.

Ours is 18 holes Saturday and 18 holes Sunday.
Gross and Handicap prizes
R1 is random draw
R2 goes in gross score order with the leaders going out last

Yes of course, we have been canvassing member's opinions too. At present we run 36 holes on a Sunday. This has advantages and disadvantages.

Two of the main problems are that it is a VERY long day and our best two or three players almost always have to play in a county match. We're considering moving the competition to two consecutive Saturdays and implementing a cut for the second round. Information about what other clubs do is something I feel obliged to consider.

The replies here have been very helpful and your question is a very fair one.

Hi Budfox,

For our club championships we do it this way, we have 3 qualifying medals played end of june and 2 in july. Your BEST 2 gross scores from the 3 comps are added for your total score. The top 15 players and last years winner then qualify for the knockouts. These are played Sunday (last 16), Tue (last 8) and Thu (semi final) The final is then played on the following Saturday and the 2 finalist slog it out over 36 holes to be crowned champ. All are gross, we don't have a NET champion.

Seems to work well.

Wouldn't work at clubs where people have jobs.....

Hi Steve.
Knowing your club as I was a member there and still play there on occasions.
As you have so many entrants, probably your best option would be 2 rounds over separate
weekends.
I also wouldn't reduce the field after round 1 either, purely because you would lose a few anyhow.
Putting lower handicap players out first imo would not be a good idea as I know you have lots
of groups of mates that like to play together.
I do like the idea of putting an order in the 2nd round dependant on first round results as it
adds to the pressure and the one who handles that best will win.

We just had ours weekend just gone, and I WON.... Woo hoo.

Saturday is Handicap order with lowest out 1st starting at 8am
Sunday is reverse score (gross) order with the lowest gross score teeing off last, again 8am start.

Ive played in 36 hole championships in one day and don't rightly care for them, as it tends to be who swings it well on the day in them conditions who wins. Over 2 days if your 3 shots behind after 1st round we all know that a new day in golf can be soooo different from the previous.

plus a lot more may play over 2 days then just the 1.
