Can some one enlighten me as to what the point of these new "mini" woods are I've starting seeing?

thanks

Basically between a Driver and a 3-wood. A deep faced, larger headed 3-wood designed mainly for use off the tee for people that struggle with the driver!

Thanks Dan,
l'm still confused though, if they're mini surely they have a smaller sweet spot and so will be more difficult to hit?

They're shorter in length too so that should help to control the face. A 3wood is generally easier to hit than a Driver, you could argue that has a smaller sweet spot?

It has a shorter, 3-wood length shaft but with a larger head than a 3 wood. So theoretically it's as easy to hit off a tee as a 3-wood (which are generally regarded as easier to hit), but with slightly more distance due to the cranked loft and larger head. The shorter shaft helps massively with control.

The sweet spot for hitting a golf ball is exactly the same size whether the club face is the size of a dustbin lid or a jaffa cake

So in theory the larger the club face the more margin for error (poor shot) before a complete miss

out of interest why are GI irons generally larger than Players irons in that respect?

Forgiveness.

The sweet spot is the same size, but the areas around the sweetspot are sweeter on a bigger club than a small club so in theory off centre hits should be less damaging, is my understanding.

Yup my understanding too

They use technology/clever design in an attempt to reduce the effect of a bad shot (one that isn't off the sweet spot) but it'll still lose something compared to one out the sweet spot, be that spin, flight etc which will ultimately be a reduction in either accuracy or distance but the loss of either will be reduced by the club design which gives you an impression of the club having a larger sweet spot even though in reality it isn't

edit: cant stop thinking about jaffa cakes now :D

A different response....

In its original incantation (the SLDRMini) it was a logical extension to utilise the lower spin generation for any given loft.

You can give a player a welcomingly high loft on a club that can still deliver a good driving trajectory/flight and a good launch trajectory.

Mine has more loft than any of the 3 woods I currently, or have ever, owned.

The design (of that model) also delivers excellent results with even off centre hits. The drop off is markedly less than from the 460cc version of the club which is quite sensitive to this - and vastly superior to most 3 wood heads.

Simply put it's the most consistent, forgiving, easy to hit 'distance club' I have ever had in the bag....and I have had a lot!

Interesting...
so I've just gone from a 1-sw to a 4-pw and I'm looking for something to bridge the gap between the driver and the 4 iron (probably try and find a 3i but looking for something to replace the 1&2 iron. Could this be a possible filler?

Depends on you but there's one he'll of a gap between a driver and a 4 iron form most people!

I currently have a 16 degree mini, 5 wood and strong 4h between my driver and 4 iron although the latter are more about choice rather than gap ( we have a lot of different 180 to 230 yd approaches most rounds at the moment.

My Ping 1-iron and bladed 2 haven't been in the bag for some time!

In my last set my 4i was about 190, 3 - 200, rarely if ever connected with my 2 so rarely used it, and anything from 220-240 with the 1i. Thinking: get a matching 3i, a 5w and maybe something else but might go 3 and 5 wood. Probably need to hit a lot more clubs to find out what makes sense. I have issue with hybrids that I need to get over.

Cheers

Interestingly I find my Mini SLDR a handful of the Tee but on Par 5 off the Deck love it, maybe its the larger head, so its in the bag for this reason only rather than a a 3 wood
