Since I had lessons last year my swing is undoubtedly more effective and I love the results, however, I don't like the way it looks or feels. It is short and feels like I barely get the club above hip height (I know I do get a bit higher than that but that is how it feels), I have very little wrist hinge and very little lag. All in all it just feels a bit naff.

I know why it is like that because I am not physically capable of swinging back any further without introducing all sorts of faults so until I work on my flexibility, it is what it is. When I'm on the course and I see the results and my scores I don't really think about it, or care, but at the range this weekend I couldn't stop thinking that I wish I could make a fuller swing more flowing swing with the same results.

I know the results are the most important thing and I'm not planning on changing the swing but I just wondered if I was the only one who has a swing they hate that produces results they love?

I haven't got a clue how my swing looks but it feels ok when i connect with the ball

I have always been told that the only thing that matters is the ball flight

Always use Furyk as an example - awful looking but ball flight is spot on

If your ball flight is what you want then I wouldn't worry about it

I have just made the exact same change. The pro I saw pointed out that I was doing all sorts of funky stuff with my legs to compensate for my lack of flexibility, and my huge slide forward into impact was the cause of my inconsistency.

Now that my bottom half is much quieter, the results are night and day. My slice has gone and shots are now dead straight or a very slight hint of draw. Still working on hitting up on the driver but that apart, my ball striking is so much better and consistent. But like you, I feel I only have half a swing now. Hoping the work on flexibility bears some fruit.

It's that age old question. Good looking swing vs Functional swing.

My old swing, before lessons, resembled an octopus trying to Morris dance. When it worked it was great, but there were just too many off days caused by too many faults.

My pro always uses a iPad to video and analyse my swing. When I first saw it I was nearly sick!

Now after around 10 lessons I'm starting to get somewhere. I saw my backswing for the first time since the changes were made and the difference is night and day. Very pleased with that.

Downswing is still very much a work in progress so I'm not overly happy yet. My swing is far from pretty, but it works much, much more than it used to.

My swing is working much better now but, to answer your question, I would prefer a swing that is functional and delivers a score rather than a 'pretty' swing that doesn't.

Several things...
I don't care what you have to do, get yourself available for the Jack Jarrett!!!

Secondly, relax. It is one of the few swings around the club, low handicappers included that look neat and functional and the same on every shot and you seem to produce great shots and distance with not much effort. Seeing it at close quarters as I regularly do it is something aspirational.

You are a long way from paralell but the club is always on plane and you make a good turn. You have a slow methodical tempo, as opposed to my Mach 2 effrots that look like an octopus having an epileptic fit and you rarely find trouble which makes scoring off your new improved figure easier. Keep it simple and do what you're doing and forget what it looks like. You have nothing to fear on an artistic impression viewpoint and hte technical merit points are high too

Finallly...
Get your chipping sorted!

Would you two like to take this to PM :smirk:

Interesting question..

I used to not like my swing but this was based on zero evidence. After getting a few kind compliments on smoothness and consitency I decided to video it and was actually pleasantly surprised.

Having not had a lesson in ~25 yrs my swing is very much what it is and I've no intention to remodel it. I care about impact, specifically 12 inches behind the ball to 12 inches after it and as long as that's ok I couldn't care less what action does it. It's this that gives results and I for one am more interested in that. Does this stop me from tinkering with stuff - no chance :p

I'm fairly sure I've got a hideous swing but have never looked at it or had it looked at. Until such time as my game goes to pot I'll continue the way I am. I'm at an all time low for handicap at the moment and feel there is still improvement to come this season. I've never considered myself talented enough to play off 3 or 4 so I'm not going to attempt to remodel my game or swing to try and get there.

Sounds like a good swing to copy.

You've probably seen my swing plenty pal..... its shortish and very compact. .... the only club I really seem to struggle with is the driver.... great one day cronic the next....

I think the trick with a compact swing especially is tempo and rhythm. .... if I get too quick its shocking. ..... if im nice and deliberate I get great results. ..

Like you I wouldnt be very flexible but the upside to a compact swing is more consistency and also your timing doesnt have to be perfect either to get good results

You dont have to have a long swing for power either.....

I'll see what I can do when (if) I am next at the range. Those visits are last resorts for me so don't hold your breath :D

Get yourself down the range tonight with Homer....or tomorrow, or the next day or ........

I wouldnt complain about a short backswing, keeps things much more consistent and easier to repeat. I would certainly swap it for my overswing at the moment!

to say steve stricker has no wrist hinge is wrong. he does. he take it back very wide, keeps the width and basically starts getting rid of the hinge on the way down whilst maintaining the width. he times the release beautifully has he has maybe one inch of shaft lean at impact!

to say he has no wrist hinge is misleading. he just doesn't hinge as much as most and doesn't hold onto it on the downswing.

Couple of weeks ago after a nice 5w in the right direction off a sloped lie, my FC said you must have incredible hand to eye coordination...

(I'm feeling just a tad smug)

But he follows up a moment later with:

... because your swing is <infraction> shocking!!

Steve Stricker's not done too bad with a short swing with no wrist hinge!

Fair comment - too late to edit so just read my post as "little" in place of "no"

I'm pretty sure, in fact I know, that my swing gets nowhere near as close to parallel at the top as Stricker's based on those pictures
