Yesterday was my day off work and since I'm still trying to decide on what set of irons I should get I set off to American Golf and also to a few other local Pro shops and got stuck in with trying the different selections of Irons they had on offer.

After trying lots of different clubs I came to the decision that the new Cobra S3 Max irons felt the best for my ability. I didnt purchase any at the time because I wanted to check online prices and be 100% sure with my decision.

So today I signed in to GM Forums to find Direct Golf have 20% off everything this week. This now means I can either get the cobra irons in the combo set (graphite) for £440 or the Irons (steel) for £280 and then add two rescue clubs at £90 each and make my set up that way.

What would you guys do?

What shafts did you try? If you got on with the steels, don't bother with the graphite and get steels plus hybrids.

Or, go back and try the graphites - you've got a week of discount haven't you?

I used to use graphite shafts when I was recovering from an appendectomy (steel's were too heavy after 1 month). When I was back to full health, I was terrible with the graphites (swing speed, etc) and traded in for steel.

But horses for courses.

I agree that with a week's grace period go and try both the graphite and the steel together and see what works best for you. If you aren't entirely happy with either try something else in the graphite and steel

When I was in American Golf their sales assistant recommended that I go with the Steel shafted Irons because Graphite are for Juniors and Seniors.

But my teaching Pro has told me to go for them in the Graphite shafts because I hit them more consistently and they will help with my slower tempo swing speed.

So with this conflicting info I really don't know what to do, I guess its down to which ever I feel is the best.... I just hope I'm not wrong and regret my choice in several months time.

I would go with what your teaching pro said - he will know more about your swing than any sales assistant. To generalise and say that graphite is for juniors and seniors is not correct. It is down to your swing speed - if your pro says you have a slow swing speed then generally you will benefit from graphite. The main thing is to try the clubs on a range before you commit to buying - whichever shaft you eventually choose.

Well I've got all Sunday afternoon away from the Mrs so I might spend a good part of it on the range testing clubs to help make up my mind so I can order them on the Monday. It really was only between the Burner 2.0's and the Cobra S3 Max Irons so I might just need to hit and compare them some more to make my final choice.

Thanks for the replies,

Dr, what's your handicap, if you have one?

There are some quality mizuno irons in the Direct Golf sale, with the MX-300 for the low-mid handicap range range upto the MX-100 for the high handicaps, with the MX-200 somewhere in the middle. The prices range from £220 to £320 - cant go wrong at that price!

I haven't got my HC yet but I think were going to be talking high to uncharted lol!!

I have an Ex-Demo Mx200 from a friend and it hits ok, not as nice as the ex-demo burner or S2 Max irons that I also have. But no harm in asking my teaching pro if he has any of the older Mizuno stock so I can test them out before I make my final decision

Anyone else find they spent more time debating which new Irons to get then it took them to choose their latest car..... Or is that just me??

I had graphite irons a few years back, to protect my (tennis) elbow. Also had a tennis racket designed for the same purpose. Not sure either worked as had it off and (mostly) on for the last ten years. :( :( :(

Not sure of the relevance but graphite is certainly not just for whippersnappers and old gits. ;)
