Recently I got fitted for a new driver and it was mentioned that perhaps I should consider moving from my current ball a PROV1 to a softer ball

I am considering a Callaway Chrome Soft and a Srixon z star anybody used either ?

Cheers

Z Star is virtually the same as a ProV...
Chromesoft is good, a bit less spin for me than a ProV but a good all-rounder...

Why were you told to change? Z-Star is Srixon's Pro-V1 so apart from the fact the Z-Star can often be picked up on a deal they are essentially the same ball. Never tried the Chrome but my own opinion of golf balls is that you should use the one you like as it really makes very little difference.

It was more of a suggestion I have a relatively slow swing speed and although the prov1 is good for me with approach shots etc I need a softer ball from off the tee one that compresses more

I would take that with a pinch of salt TBH, you SS dictates the distance you hit it and the ball isn't going to change that very much. You should choose a ball you like around the greens and use that, if I were you, I'd stick with the ProV1

I'm about the same swing speed as you,

NXT Tour S is my ball of choice. The white is a bit too soft feeling, but the Yellow is spot on.

Chrome Soft is a good ball.

As Hawkeye posted though, distance is more governed by swing speed and Titleist even state that there's only about 5 yards between all balls off the Driver! Feel off the putter and action on the greens is more important than pure distance imo..

If you don't want a ball that spins try a Bridgestone e6. If you want a ball that behaves like a prov1, don't buy the Bridgestone e6

All already mentioned, but if you want a lower compression premium ball with a urethane cover (I.e that actually spins round the green), then your options are:
Wilson FG Tour
Callaway Chrome Soft
Srixon ad333 tour

I really like the FG tour, very good ball.

All rubbish. Pick a ball that is good with putter and wedges first, then irons, then woods.
If the Pro V works, and you can put up with the price, stick with it

All rubbish - nice!

You could argue that the most important thing is that you find a ball that behaves well from the tee and gets you into trouble less often.
Balls that spin too much with a driver (especially into the wind) can be very damaging.
