My driving, which has historically been the strongest part of my game had deserted me for the past few months and I was terrible off the tee with a driver in my hand. It seemed to permeate through the bag, and my ball striking everywhere from driver through to the short-irons deteriorated to the point I've already gone up a full stroke following 10 straight 0.1s.
Determined to halt the slide, I've been hard at it on the range, and I think I've stumbled on a possible reason and fix which I took onto the course in Wednesday's medal and made buffer for the first time the season.
All I did was narrow my stance the width of a fag-packet and square my feet up slightly; instantly my swing became smoother and more controlled and I didn't feel as if I was swaying off or onto the ball at any point in the swing. The buffer could easily have been a cut but for a couple of stupid holes where bravado got the best of me (did I honestly believe I could thread a six-iron through a 3-foot gap in the trees 20 yards in front!), but after a spell in the doldrums, it hinted at some green shoots of revival and I'm starting to feel a bit more confident about the season.
Here's hoping it continues!
