Well after the hurricane conditions of last Wednesday our course escaped with minimal damage compared to most around my area.. We've had 2 local courses with big member bases that have well over 100 trees down in each..... Mostly Evergreens...... We lost an Iconic Pine tree which is the figurehead of our Index 1, 9th Hole and is basically on every promotional picture for the club.....
May have been a blessing in disguise as even though it stood over 50ft tall it was shallow rooted and also it was decaying from inside which no one could see.....
It would have been way worse had it fell on someone while playing...
So i got a text from our Captain Thursday evening wanting to know was i available for a bit of tree planting today and as the course is being rested due to weather i thought it appropriate to help out being the Competitions Secretary for this season as well....
A thoroughly enjoyable day and after our bit was done the club has now planted more than 200 Oak Trees with roughly another 100 of mixed species.....
The landscaper who is also a member is expect to loose maybe 1/4 of the total planted and said it was the Norm... Seemingly Deer and Rabbits are the worst culprits for attacking them...
This is my little fellow planting an Oak.....Little does he know that in about 35 yrs time he'll be cursing the living daylights out of it after hooking his approach on 18....
