A day out with the lads and my new irons.
Hi all,
It was unbelievably good to be back on the golf course today, yes it was gray and a little foggy (a lot at the end) and damp but the golf was good from everyone in the group.
When I was a kid my mate always used to say “you can tell what everyone got for Christmas cos they are wearing itâ€. Well it was a little like that today, I had my new irons (Mizuno MP-53) and Fundy had his super slow mo camera so there was lots of playing with toys.
I don’t want to review the irons until I have played with them a little more but I do have to make comment on them. I picked them up from the fitter this morning and we had a little knock with them and a good chat, the guy has been a star and I think I could talk golf with him all day long. Left there and headed for the course to meet the lads. We all had a little warm up on the range and a lot of chatter about Christmas and the cricket and what not before heading for the first. We all hit good drives and reasonable second shots, now its iron to the green time (par 5). I hit a 7 iron to the front of the green, the flight of my shafts is pretty high and the ball was 50% underground when I got to it but it was the most beautiful feeling golf shot I have ever played. Later in the round I hit a 7 iron from behind the hedge so had no idea where it had gone. I asked Fundy and he told me it was the best 7 iron shot I will every play, I think he meant to say the best 7 iron I have ever seen you play, but whatever.
My bad iron shots would not have been forgiven by any club every made and I am pretty sure my good shots could not have been or felt any better with any club ever made. As it stands this was the most rewarding golf purchase ever from fit to first round for me. My old clubs feel agricultural and numb in comparison but there is no real comparison. I am convinced that I was lead to the exact right choice of shaft for me. The day was made better still by the fact that I was crushing the ball off the tee and the break had left me somehow able to move my weight correctly for the first time ever.
Bacon sandwich and chips in the club house followed by dinner with my wife and her Sexiest friend … ye, I am a happy boy.
Custom Fit convert… yes
Mizuno convent… yes
Worried how easy they are to mark… yes
If you hear any chatter about me wearing a ping hat, it’s not true.
