After a successful day about a year ago I went to the Waitrose Cookery school in London again, for the day today, and did a French Brasserie cooking day and I have to say it was brilliant

In the morning the chef demonstrated a starter, main course and pudding which we then cooked and woofed down for dinner and then a different chef did a demonstration of two different main courses that we had the chance to sample. If anyone is interested in learning to cook better I can thoroughly recommend these courses. Interesting for me was that of the 15 people in todays course there were about 9 men to 6 ladies, I thought I'td be the other way round and shows how men are getting much more into cooking!

Some of the men we're quite attractive Rich! Lucky I pared up for the day with a young lady as all the cooking is done in 2's!

the best chefs in the world are all men:mmm:

Prior to being an international IT Guru, I was a chef for many years. Everyone should try to get some basic cooking skills, but I could never recommend it as a career.

Are we brothers from another mother? Exactly the same career path from me. Still keep my hand in the cooking game with the family restaurant/boozer, although only with menu design etc, dont actually get my hands dirty, we pay people for that!

Proper cooking should be mandatory in schools, and i dont mean fairy cakes. Basic stuff, give people the ability to cook say 5 dishes or even just 5 main processes, knife skills. Even today, I have mates in the mid thirties who could not boil and egg.

I can't actually boil an egg and my mum was a catering teacher.. (I probably could just don't like them so never tried)

I can cook a normal dinner with no problem and often do. This was a little bit more upmarket cuisine and the results were lovely, I had the best Madeira jus I've ever tasted and all I really want is a bucket of that and a loaf of bread!

Couldn't agree more. Kids come out of school with no knowledge of basic cookery, how to budget, how to pay bills, how to wallpaper or any such practical task. At least they know French verbs though.

I have a GCSE in french and have no idea of verbs, blagged my way through all exams!

Agree 100% on the whole life skills, how banks work, interest rates, council tax, mortgages, PAYE and national insurance, how to wire a plug (or at least know which colour wire is the hurty one!) etc etc etc..

It is mandatory for children up to Year 9 and The School Food Plan has gone a long way to educate kids in not only the basics in cooking, but nutrition and understanding of where food has come from. Like him or loathe him, Jamie Oliver has certainly had an impact.
