A case for a bigger club head (rather than hole)... probably not.

While there is a separate thread around a bigger hole.. but is there a case for a bigger clubhead or maybe not.

My 6 yr old is just starting in the game. There is always a dearth of quality clubs for kids. US Kids is the biggest brand - it is relatively expensive as kids grow out of it quickly. There is a new brand called Golphinforkids - the clubs are lighter & club heads are bigger - which in theory is helpful for kids.

My son played with borrowed & hand me down USKids or Dunlops, and he hacks around the course alright. I thought the Golphinforkids was a great idea and so got him his first set. As the clubs are longer and he has to choke down, his distance off the tee has come down. But the more interesting bit is how he handles the irons. With the regular USKids irons, he is alright, but with the larger G4K irons he has a tendency to hit the toe end more often than not. Watching him do that over two, I was wondering if a bigger clubhead is good or not... His pro lent him some old USK clubs and he is back to hitting them square. I must say that having incorrect fitting clubs is probably a bigger problem than bigger head size, but it still makes me wonder about club head size. Would you play better if you had irons with bigger club heads?

Only if you spend a lot of time completely missing the ball with current sized heads.

Would that be for beginners then?? When drivers with big 460cc heads are allowed and common place, why not iron heads?

Blade length has a lot to do with forgives. A mizuno JPX is a lot more forgiving than a mizuno MP 4 not just because of the perimeter weighting but because of the blade length. A more effective sweet spot.
