Did you know you can have your course ratified (or whatever) to hold 9 hole qualifiers? My place has, and we are going to start running them in September. I have voiced my concerns, "good grief I can hear some members already, that'll help the bandits" In the clubs defence our front nine is VERY hilly, and we have older members who just knock it round the back nine, (nice and flat). 9 hole comps will allow them to activate their H/C's.

Is anyone else's course doing these?

W have been having these comps since I joined three and a half years ago. They are excellent. We have just had the back nine okay end so we can either play the front or back nine in comps. They are an excellent idea for those who don't have 4-5 hrs mid week to play comps

Never thought of that. I could loose mine in two holes sometimes! (Off 1/2)

It's not quite as straightforward as that. If you play off 20 you get 10 shots. Play off 19 you don't get 9 1/2. A couple of times we have got cards wrong when entering scores in computer. We have queried it but just been told to put down same as computer. Simples.

our course now we have a nine hole comp every week either Tuesday or Thursday. With either a Stableford 18 hole or medal on the other tues or Thursday . No two weeks are ever the same.

Somebody, somewhere, at your place will have a chart which shows how many strokes you receive based on your exact handicap.

WE have 9 hole qualifiers so some of our ladies who cant manage 18 holes can maintain their handicaps. Also as we are trying to recruit more lady members at the moment, I would like to start running 9 hole evening qualifiers too for those who cannot pay during the day.

We do 9 hole twilight medals. Played a few this year. In theory they should be easier but I dont find that. Standing on the first tee with only half your shots gets in your head.

A twilight medal sounds brilliant, wish our course was suitable to do this but the 9th/10th holes are one of the furthest points from the clubhouse.

As far as I know it doesn't have to be front 9 or back 9 - you can get a 9-hole SSS for a mixture of 9 of the holes.

I think the initial confusions were when we played our first couple of back nine comps. Not sure of the whys and what's but the hcap differance was slightly differant from the front nine to the back when it had been evaluated. Before we play the back nine comps now, we check the chart in the club shop to see how many shots we have.
had a few beers at a party Saturday night and was talking to a guy from your place re Oakmere. Cant remember if he said he was a treasurer or summat or other. Plays regularly with Crawford. We were going down memory lane re the changes at your place over the years Oxton etc. I was gobsmacked when he told me Lady Mortison ? Owned the course. Was she married to commander Mortison. We stayed at his farm 40 yrs ago when camping with Rufford Colliery SJAB.

Yes. The Commanders Course name came from Commander Mortenson and the Admirals Course from Admiral Sherbrooke. Haven't you been warned about drinking with strange people?

Strange how things are staring you in the face and you don't see it. Remember Commander Mortenson taking about eight at a time in his white Range Rover or summat similar round his fields and estate, for scraggy arsed kids from a mining village it was the trip of a lifetime. He game us all a box of quality streets apiece. You don't forget things like that when you are a kid. We spent hours playing in his barns full of straw, think it was with his daughter.
re drinking with strange people that's what Dean said 😁👍

Great story , tashy.
We never met any toffs in SE London!

They were actually brilliant weekends camping with all the old second WW11 gear, bell tents, Kitchen was off the back of a Lorry, wooden frame with the canvas. Paraffin stoves. Div Superintendents wife was a cook and God could she cook. Digging holes for toilets. Mint. Doing map reading and studying for your badges. A million miles away from today. I did not know at the time doing first aid as a kid would lead to my 30 odd years of employment.
