Anyone play such competitions and how does it work?

Our winter league is a 9 hole competition and had a bit of a dispute on the tee today - not a great start!! Other matches I've played so far have been calculated on full difference, taken against course stroke index and allocated accordingly. So today I gave 7 shots and we played the easier front 9 (not my choice) and the allocation was 50% of 7 = 3.5 rounded up to 4...

No exact rules seem to have been set so wondering what the norm is - assuming there is one??

I went on to win although a nett half on the extra shot hole which would have been a win !!

Any thoughts?

Now I'm going to get shot down on this but I would have thought that it would be 7 shots given on SI 1 to 7 and you would only give a shot where the corresponding SI holes appear on that half of the course. As far as I am aware each half of the course has an even split of the 18 SI's.

So if the front 9 contained SI's 1, 3, 5 and 7 you would give a shot at each, and if the back 9 had SI's 2, 4 and 6 then the same would apply if you only played the back 9

Clear as mud Amanda

i go with chris you give the 7 shots on SI 1-7 if you play the 9 holes which contain even SI holes you only give 3 shots on holes SI 2,4,6 not the 3.5 you generously gave rounded up to 4, so therefore you would of won easier than it appears?

I agree with your logic but my opponent didn't and had most to gain and in the end it was easier to let my golf do the talking

I can see that Amanda but, in the absense of a clear competition rule, she has no right to coerce you into giving an extra shot. Funny, when I have played in any mixed event it's the ladies who can quote chapter and verse the hanicap rules!

Well done anyway!

At our course the winter league is played front nine only. All SI are evens on our front nine and odd on are back. So all SI on front nine become 1/2.
1st is SI6 so becomes SI3
2nd is SI12 becomes SI6
etc etc

Then we have half hcap for your scorecard as you say your 14 becomes 7, 13 would be 6.5 rounded up to 7.
When we are playing in the doubles match it is always 3/4s of difference from the low man/woman or full difference in singles, the same way it would over full course.

If your opponent had a hcap of 25 that would be 13 shots in winter league. so you would have to give them 6 shots if you were the low person. 5 in doubles as it would be 4.5 rounded up

If someone else was lower than you say 6hcap they would have 3 hcap over the 9 holes and have to give you 4 shots in singles and 3 in doubles matchplay.

Thats how I have always been told and how its always been worked out for us.

Hmmm all very confusing and the committee should have been clear on the rules when they changed it to a 9 hole competition this year. I'm out first in the Daily Mail competition away tomorrow so need my opponent to wind me up on the 1st tee and I'll be fine

I can't find anything in my CONGU book to help and I think that your committee should do as Phil the previous posters and clarify beforehand the rules that apply. It strikes me as daft that the lower handicapper not only has to potentially give an extra shot just because of the maths but has hardly any holes to try and win on. Best of, playing cards for it in the warm

Best of luck in the Daily Mail!

Ours is obviously half handicap and strokes are given on the most difficult holes. So if 1 was not on the first nine then you go up the scale until you get the lowest stroke index and work from there. Someone with an 18 handicap would still get their 9 shots. Someone with 19 would get and extra shot on the lowest index on that nine.

It seems to work fine, no complaints so far...!

All I can say is thank goodness ours is an 18 hole comp with a maximum playing handicap of 18!!

I agree with Chris on this, when we play 10 hole comps at the end of the year this is how we calculate our allowances.
