Still being relatively new to golf I was wondering what the general consensus is on 7 woods. The reason I ask was I was in my local pro shop asking about adding another hybrid to the bag when one of the people in there said

"you could always put in a 7 wood" and started to laugh.

The other guy said "Im not saying anything" and also began laughing.

I didnt want to seem nieve and ask why they were laughing so I said nothing, but why were they? I didnt think there was anything wrong with them.

I hope I dont sound like a fool.

A 7 wood is a 3 iron replacement club. Nowt wrong with it, but if you have a 23 degree rescue, you don't need one.
Used to have the name of "gentleman's persuader" (i.i.r.c.) because they were favoured by older chaps who struggled with long irons. Super clubs, redundant these days.

I used to have 3,5,7 mizunos woods, absolutely brilliant clubs -just depends whether you want to impress yours mates with your clubs or your score. ;) ;)

I have carried a 7-wood for most of the past ten years. From out of fairway rough, it is a great rescue club and if you need a safety 200-yard tee shot or something for a long par-3, then it is a ton more forgiving than a 3-iron.

I carry the latter in practice and alternate shots but any medal competition, the 7-wood is back in there.

And for the record, I play off 5.8.

I need something to bridge the gap between my 4 wood and 23*Hybrid. I was thinking of a 20* but the guy said I would see much difference between that and my current hybrid.

I have carried a 7 wood. Got an old one in the cupboard that cost next to nothing 12 years ago is worth even less now. It comes out for a breather now and then.

I also have a 7 wood. A cheap £10 Donnay job.

It's easier to use than my CLK hybrid, more reliable, and is great on long par 3's and is used more than my 3 and 5 wood. It's been a bit of a score saver this year after a dire tee shot.

Okay so it's nothing fancy and looks a bit out of place together with the 5 wood in the bag. But despite the shame of having them, it always puts a smile on my face when it gets me out of a tight spot.

I've not yet found a hybrid that can kick the Donnay's out of the bag.

The shame of it!!

I've got a 20* and a 23* hybrid. I've never actually checked, but they feel to be around 10-15 yards different to me.

I had the 20* first ( about 190yds for me ), and then my 5I is 28* ( about 160 yds ), and I was having problems with such a big gap. So I was ideally looking for that 175ish distance, and the 23* seems to me to fill the gap.

Also the 20* hybrid is a hell of a lot easier to use off the fairway than my 4w, so I use it a lot on those lay up shots on par 5s.
