Im pondering on this for the past week or two....The last 3 rounds iv hardly used my 3rescue and im wondering is a 5 wood as versatile as the hybrid......

Im thinking of maybe replacing the 3R with a 58 deg wedge...
I get very adventurous at time swith my short game around the greens and seem to have more fun and get more of a kick playing finesse shots rather than Flying a hybrid long and straight.

Ive just got rid of my 3r rescue as it was nearly doing the same job as my 5 wood, and looking at your setup you could certainly do with a wedge or two.

Im thinking this too PJ.
My set has PW,GW,SW....at 43 deg, 49 deg, 55 deg....
But im thinking of maybe dumping the 3R and my current SW and replacing them with a 54 and a 58 deg vokey.

I've never had a 5 wood but had a go with one when I bought my clubs and it was nearly as far as my 3 wood so didn't bother.

Surely the question you need to ask yourself is which clubs would help you score best, not which clubs would you most enjoy hitting.

I count 13 clubs you have now so you could change your SW for the 54 & 58 and still keep the rescue couldn't you?

I wouldn't dream of being without my 5 wood, it's very confidence inducing at address off the tee or the deck, I don't use it out of the light rough unless its very light and the ball sat up.

I dropped my 3 iron to accommodate an extra wedge, when I thought about it I was normally only using the 3 iron for low punched shots out of trouble and the 4 iron does the same job.

Yes actually i could region....Never thought of that as i was thinking of buying a driver sometime in the future also.... ;)

Worry about which club to drop if and when you find a driver that suits you.

Sorted.

Now... which make of wedges :D

Well iv got Vokeys Clevelands and MD's in mind....Not sure which.

Surely the answer should be which one saves you more shots? I can understand getting enjoyment out of being adventurous with your short game but in my experience being adventurous doesn't lower your score. Having a good solid short game will lower your handicap. It's great to be able to play the sexy shots like the flop etc but how often do you really need to do anything clever around the greens? The key to being accurate is getting the ball rolling as soon as possible. Boring I know but if your in it to lower your handicap then I'm afraid boring is the way to go where chipping is concerned.

As for dropping the rescue then only really you can decide. If you're not using it, it's a wasted space in your bag you could use for another wedge (and you can never have too many wedges :)). You might find when the course softens up in the winter that it becomes useful again.

Kid I am at a close handicap to you so here’s my feedback on what I’ve changed in my bag over the last 18 months.

My 3 iron got junked in favour of a 7 wood. when ever I took the 3 iron out the bag all i could hear was the mission impossible theme tune, I tend to hit woods well anyway and found a 7 wood would get me about 210-220 so was an ideal replacement.

This now gives me the below spread:

Driver 280-300yds
3 Wood 250yards
5 wood 230-240
7 wood 210-220

Ideally the 3 wood and 5 wood are close enough to drop one, but on long par 3’s or short par 4’s I still hit the 3 wood, but I’m not 100% with a 3 wood off the deck on fairways so this is where the 5 wood steps in.. It also seems that the 5w and 7w seem common second shot clubs on long par 5’s.

I am currently struggling with my 4 iron and this is being replaced with a hybrid as we speak, I am just awaiting the postman to deliver one. I purchased second hand as I am not sure whether this is going to be a good thing, but I have nothing at the moment for 190-200, and my 5 iron copes from 180-190.

Re wedges. I managed to get a 52 vokey, and in all honesty I would not change this wedge unless something very special come out. I only tend to use it from about 60 yards in but its so universal it’s a life saver. When I brought my irons I managed to haggle a 60* Taylormade wedge in with the deal. If I’m honest unless I’m in a deep hole or a nightmere bunker (st andrews style) its simply too much, I doubt I use it more than twice a round, and if I do I still think the vokey could have done the job more than ample. I’m wondering weather its the 60* being too much, or whether it s a vokey confidence thing. But one thing for sure I reckon the vokey was one of the main reasons I’m starting to shoot 10 over rounds more frequently, because no matter how long or short a hole is, every hole has a green that I need to get close to the pin on! I really stand by vokey’s and ideally like a 58 if one come up the right way.

exactly, i often find the 60* inspires stupidly flash shots, and while some times you may get away with them, my 52* would have played the shot alot simpler, and alot more accurate with a better result. I dont think i can put my 60* anywhere near as close on the greens as i can with the 52*

I've been using my 5 wood a great deal recently. Off the tee and certainly off the deck. I LOVE it. :)
I only carry a rescue 3hybrid because I use it on two tees at my home course, a 190 uphill par 3 and for the "drive" at the last par 4 (where 208 is the lake :))

Rather than use it on tight par 4s, I've been preferring a shorter but more predictable 4 iron.

If I had to leave one out, as long as I'm not playing my home course, it would be the 3 rescue.

A 5 wood has long since been the favoured club in my bag. I used a Callaway big bertha from 1994-1997 and have been using a Wilson Staff fybrid since retiring the big bertha to my spare set 15 months ago.

5 Wood inspires confidence. Hate hybrids. Rubbish clubs for rubbish players. Wedges? If you can't spin a ball to make it stop, a 64 deg lob is a must.

Interesting theory as more and more pro's carry hybrids. Also, as for making the ball stop, what's wrong with the chip and run?
