Anyway, after four hrs in bed I got up for a 18 hole knock about with two mates. We were booked in behind a society on our local course. After walking halfway up the second I looked on the third and said ave a feeling were gonna get held up. Whilst waiting for the fourball to putt out on the third. We watched them putt out, put the flag back then three walk off whilst fourth stands on green for 30 seconds with back to us filling in score card. All at once our threes tyrets kicked in.
I could flippin go on and on but I wasted enough time on them today. In the clubhouse we were asked if we had a good round, a quick. "Five flippin hours for a round of golf is stupid" turned a few heads.

Normal for following a society, feel for the poor people in the society too!

I have followed them before, best way is to just accept it and throw in a few side games.

Either that or head to another course with no society on.

Were that to happen at our Club the society's organiser would be spoken to. They could find it difficult to make a repeat booking.

I think the club has a good deal of responsibility, need to provide the facilities to prevent slow play. It is hard as the society is technically the customer and you want your customers to come back.

If you can afford to treat a society in a way that they would not want to come back then the club needs to think if they actually need to allow societies to play! Or at least stringently vet their customers.

I hope it wasn't last Thursday as that was us at Norwood. Nah, we were round in 4 hours easily. Mind you, we were keen to get back for the steak and ale pie.

Yes and that responsibility extends to insisting upon handicap certs, reminders to the organiser on dress codes, pace of play guidelines and etiquette.

It is, after all, a golf club whose prime objective is to provide good golfing conditions for its members who own the Club and pay not insignificant amounts for the "privilege".

The members are very happy to share their course and clubhouse with visitors and guests but in return expect them to observe the rules and standards of the Club.

What is wrong with that?

A lot of societies are made up of people without club handicaps. Most clubs and their members do not " share their course and clubhouse with visitors and guests" they need the income that a society brings which helps keep the members annual subs down and also, showcases the club and course to people who may choose to join the club after playing there

Why is every one always in such a rush to finish a round of golf. Sometimes you go round in 3 hours, sometimes it's 4 and sometimes it's 5. Sometimes you have to wait on every tee and that can be a little frustrating, but you're out with your mates, having a laugh and catching up, whilst enjoying the outdoors. That's life. I don't really understand the need to have moan, but perhaps I am more laid back than some when it comes to going out and enjoying myself playing golf.

I wonder how many of the 6 people commenting so far on this thread have played in a 'society event' in the last 18 months......my guess would be 100% !

Sounds to me that the underlying issue was more about a non-competition 3 ball playing behind a 4 ball competition field than who was actually in the field.

I play the odd game in a 'mixed ability' society. The combination of 4balls of poor or occasional golfers, a strange course, playing for a score and the opportunity to socialise means that, even with a bit of chivying by the more experienced players, slow golf happens. Calling people through is a very limited option as there may be 5 or 6 groups in close order going round. Plus the organiser and the club caterers find life really tricky if the soc gets broken up and griups finish well behind.

Given that courses need income, the only solution is for the club to publish these bookings online in advance. Then everyone knows what the score is and can plan accordingly. They do this at my club and it works fine.

Not me. Don't belong to a society and never have. Just happy to go play my golf at my club and be grateful I'm outside doing something I love (and occasionally hate!).

My club is a hotel so we get a lot of societies playing and sometimes rounds can be slow. Longest it has taken is around 5.5 hours I think and at times it was frustrating having to wait to take your shot, but wait I did and we enjoyed it as well.

30 seconds filling in a score card on 18 greens = 9 minutes.

You need to rethink your 'issues'.

AMEN my man. Unfortunately, a lot of people see 'enjoying your round and not getting angry' as 'contributing to the problem' which isn't true.

No one has said enjoying a round and not getting angry is adding to the problem. What is that the acceptance that it takes 4 and a half hours plus to play a game is.

I know what happens, its slow ease back take your time you are not going anywhere etc, etc.

I play every week and bounce games never take that long, last time it took 4 & half hours in a comp was the Jackson Cup and that was when the rough was at its highest and if you missed the fairway you lost the ball. it was also 30mph wind and played off the blue tee;s which are almost 6800 yards.

if i wanted to take that long i would just play 26 holes;)

So what exactly would you want someone to do if they were stuck behind a group taking 4 + hours to get round? If they've asked to play through and been refused, then they either lose their rag and stomp about the place, or they accept the fact that it's gonna take a while and just enjoy the day.. Once they get in they can complain away..

so if everyone one just accepted it that would be the answer would it?
