Why is 59 considered to be the "Holy Grail" of Golf?
If Tiger had shot 59 yesterday it would have been 11 under - a great score, no doubt, but equivalent to a 63 on a Par 72 course so not that uncommon.
After all, what's better - 59 on a Par 70 or 60 on a Par 72....?

Surely the "Magic Number" should be 12 under, or 13 under or something like that rather than just 59....

11 under on a par 72 would be 61 surely? Or does this explain why my score are never what I think they should be .

I would guess it more about shooting in the 50s rather than the actual score to par and 59 is the most likely number. The pros are so used to scoring in the 60s that a 62 or 65 doesn't really feel like anything overly special.

Pretty much the same as us amateurs, the single figure men who regularly shoot in the 70s dream of a round in the 60s, a double figure handicapper will dream getting into the 70s and so on.

It's just a number rather than the achievement, you'd have to standardise all golf courses to make it truly meaningful :ooo:

It's because of the way we set targets- break 80, break 70 etc. Breaking 60 is the most difficult (but achievable) target regardless of the actual amount under par.

Anyway, is Tiger not off plus 6 or something? A 59 would just be a nett 65 so nothing special

I once followed Dale Reid round when she shot 59.....only thing is it was a par 65 course :(

If/when I break 70 at my place it won't bother me in the slightest that it's par 69. It was on for a while today and at no point did I think I needed to shoot 66 for it to count.

Same applies to the pros for 59 I reckon.

I guess with a par 72 there would be more par 5s and therefore more birdie chances so you could argue that 13 under on a par 72 is equivalent to 11 under on a par 70
