If you are 50+ and have just played 18 how do you feel once you have sat down for a while? I feel like I am 90! My back has seized up, so have my knees and ankles. I will be OK tomorrow morning but recently I cannot move after a round. I am not overweight by much, carrying a bit over but normal enough with a 36" waist. This game takes it out of you.

I have recently started stretching properly before I play, taking 10 minutes before leaving home to get the back and shoulders warmed up. Whilst I am not 50, I really feel this has helped enormously after the round. I was shown some excellent stretches from a Pilates teacher and I hope it will prolong my golfing career as I have always had a weak lower back.

Try playing 18 then sitting in a car for 5 hours..
I have trouble putting one foot in front of the other after that.
It's mainly down to my dodgy knees and ankles though, the rest of me feels OK.

Welcome to the club mate , its old age , some days are better then others ...................use to play 36 holes a lot , not any more

A lot of that is caused by the soggy ground!

You've probably walked the equivalent of at least 27 holes - probably more!

I'm over 50 and still play a lot of 36 competitions. I find a hot refreshing shower and clean socks between rounds really helps to freshen me up for the afternoon. I do keep pretty fit though with a lot of cycling which I guess helps a lot.

Well if its any consolation Pal.... Im 10 months shy of 40 and my legs are in bits after this morning... I carry my bag as well and in hindsight i suppose i really shouldnt be after having 2 Achilles Ruptures...
But its just so convenient to be able to walk anywhere you want across greens up and to tee boxes and bring all your clubs with you....
The best bit is when you miss greens at the opposite side to where the next tee is and your unsure of the lie and what awaits... Anyone i know that uses a trolley ends up leaving it at the side for the next tee and carrying 2 clubs and a putter with them for speeds sake.....I dont like this..

It's never bothered me, in my late 50s, my warm-up routine is two practice swishes and then Boom down the fairway. 36 holes in a day and I don't feel tired, but then I don't carry my clubs I use a Powakaddy, perhaps that is the difference, although carrying over 18 holes isn't an issue.

I'm 48, had several injuries and I'm now starting to feel my age. I've found it to be worse this winter due to the weather, closed course and lack of playing time.

I rarely get through a round in winter without my back, shoulder joints and knees aching however I've recently started playing Windwhistle which is a very hilly course and that is a killer but it beats sitting in the house.

It's not as bad in the summer but I still know about it at the end of the round.

Looking at the positives, if I get another 30 years out of it I'll die a happy man :fore:.

Normally after a game of golf we sit in the cafe and have a quick debrief then it's off to work for me . A couple of hours later I feel tired but next day I'm ok. When we have our works society outing which usually is 18 holes in the morning 4bbb, in the afternoon it's four ball singles ( another 18 holes ) finishing about 7pm.
The next couple of days I could sleep standing up!!

45 this month up and out for18 holes this morning at seven a.m home by ten then out for a run at ten thirty home to walk dogs and now sat on the sofa with cramp!! Feel great though😊

I'm 40 in July, suffer a bit with my lower back after a round. I use a Powercaddy as carrying affects me during the round, then plenty of deep heat, hot showers and red wine are required to see me through.

I'm 67 and feel a bit stiff after sitting down after a round, but it soon passes when I start moving about a bit. Some time ago I read that nobody living in the British Isles gets enough Vitamin D from sunshine. As advised, I started taking 1000 iu of Vitamin D3 every day & the difference has been noticable, much less stiffness & faster recovery. I also take Glocousamine & Chondritin & I am convinced these help. Also, there's nothing like a hot bath with Epsom Salts. Buy the unrefined stuff in 5Kg. bags, much cheaper.

I had exactly the same problems about a year ago , a friend of mine is a Titleist Performance Insitute instructor and according to him the stiffness is caused by a build up of lactic acid in the muscles produced during exercise . When we're younger our bodies can dispose of it far easier but as we get older it needs a little encouragement . Stretching before playing ideally when you get up definitely helps reduce the problem but the most important time to stretch is after shower when you've finished playing and sometimes again when you get home .

I have a double herniated L4 and L5 discs so I have to do special stretches in the morning before I can get my socks on in the morning !, but an extra session just before and after playing has pretty much sorted the problem . It only takes 10 minutes but it's worth it , if you speak to a sports physio they will be able to give you a personal regime to suit your needs.

I also take a vit. D supplement in the winter and sometimes a B12 in the summer to alleviate muscle cramps after playing , but I find brewers yeast or marmite has the same effect if you can tolerate it . Glucosamine and chondoitin also helps with joint inflammation but for me tends to upset my stomach if taken for extended periods so I take a 1/4 dose , the only problem with that is it can take 4 to 6 weeks to start to work.

As grandfather used to say old age and poverty will get us all in the end !!!.

This thread has made my day.
Just back from walking the dogs and really feeling my age and if truth be told a little sorry for myself.
I played 18 holes on Saturday morning, then a couple of miles dog walking.Bit of tidying in the garden, stiff as a board by evening.Sunday no golf but similar routine ,gardening and dogs. This morning out with the dogs again and trudging along like an old man!
Hold on ,I am an old man,74years old!
I am sure you guys will all be golfing for years to come and it is better by far than the alternative!
I play off 17 and carry 7/8 clubs in a small bag, still a golf addict, what a great sport that allows guys like me still to be out playing with both younger and better players and still once in a while getting a couple of pars or even a gross birdie.
