Noticed at the masters how many players have 5 woods rather than hybrids,Rory and tiger being the main two. I've just switched to a 5 wood , don't get on with hybrids at all, and if anything its easier to hit from pretty much anywhere. I've dropped my 3 wood I like it that much, probably drop 10 yards but its my go to club now. It really has been a find.
Does fashion dictate the clubs we choose? In a pro shop the other day a chap asked for a 5 wood and was told that people don't use them any more and that hybrids were a much better option.

I disagree entirely

I'm with you fella. Been through numerous hybrids and never really done it for me. Put an old 5 wood in the bag and since I've had it (3 rounds now) every shot I hit is money! Hit a sweet 5 wood into the wind yesterday on our long par 5, one putt for a nett birdie! Thank you very much!

I've been using a 4+ for the last 12 years, certainly easier to hit out the semi than a 3 or 2 iron

My prefered option? I use both hybrids and a 5wood :)

For me they have entirely different uses. Use what works for you

I've got to agree, I was more consistent with my old burner 5w than my 2h, although my 4h is as nice gap between 5w/2h and 4i, have considered going back to as its without doubt easier To hit, but my course is on the top of the downs and on windy days like today a punchy under the wind 2h was useful

I have just recently been looking into the new 913 19 degree hybrid and fairway wood. Couldnt hit the hybrid for toffee but the fairway wood was effortless ( and is now in my bag). I dont know but i find the head shape on a hybrid very off putting.

I've recently gone 4w / 7w combo... and I'm very pleased with it. Had the 7w in the bag for about 18months and I prefer it to any hybrid I've used previously.

This years 7w is, however, last years 5w. My dads Big Bertha 5w is weaker lofted than my 7w!

I've actually just put my 5W away as it was doing nothing but cause me trouble. I have a 3h as my longest club (other than driver), but im so consistent with it I dont worry about the distance I might be losing.

I dont think I will ever consider having 5 woods in the bag until I am over 70! I will stick to just one wood and a driver for a long time yet!

the pro's will fly a 5W higher, and land it softer, than an equivilent distance hybrid - simple as that for their selections.

most handicap golfers that I see playing both will hit the 5W further and better - but strangely when discussing it they think they are better with their hybrid. I haven't really got to the bottom of why.

I love my 5-wood. It's the original one I had with my starter set - Wilson Deep Red. Makes a lovely sound and I nearly always make such a clean contact and it flies.

I have a 5 wood and at the mo cant hit a hybrid for toffee so mine is driver 5 w then 4i, I do still carry the 3 and 4 hybrids but only use them out of the worst of lies

I've always had 5 woods, but recently I've opted for a 4 wood.

Decided to play a 4 wood for the simple reason I don't hit my 3 and 5 woods consistent distances so the 4 wood, kind of, gives me the best of both worlds.
