5 wood troubles

Got this TM R580 5 wood a few weeks ago, hit it great, any lie, out the rough, off the tee its smashing (obviously a few miss hits as we all have) but mostly it's brilliant

It needed a re grip so I gave it to the pro, who later informs me that when he took the grip off he discovered it had been bodged and 3/4" of "extra" shaft was stuck into the end which was now coming loose and compromising the club

So I'm now left with a quandary, do I look for a new 5wood or do I have it reshafted?

I'm tempted to have it reshafted as I hit it so well but I don't want to pay a fortune for a shaft as the club was only £10!

Would I be ok with a budget shaft (like £30/40) what sort of shaft does that get me?

Would it be better because I'd effectively be getting fitted for a shaft so would the club end up a better fit for me?

I should probably also mention, I've never had a 5 wood before so is the reason I hit it well because I happened to find a club that suits or just because its a 5 wood

I really reckon you should go to your pro shop or a local American Golf or equivalent and try out as many 5 woods as possible.

If you can't find one you like (or you can't buy a new club just now) then it only leaves you with the option of reshafting.

However, if you were hitting it well with a cut-and-shut shaft then I reckon you'd still be able to hit it very well with a similar shaft.

Might visit the pro tomorrow if I can and hit what he's got, only trouble is he only really has TM, ping, and titliest, and not much of any of it lol

3/4" or 3" / 4" of extra shaft?

If it's 3/4" have the extension re-done.

I doubt any pro would extend a 5 wood shaft 4" for you.

If you like it may be worth having the same shaft put back in (graphite shafts will vary more than steel due to manufacturing processes). There's a lot to be said for a club you have confidence in.

Could you get a club (same type and shaft) 2nd hand cheaper than a re-shaft?

Not so sure you want to be messing around with budget shafts. BUT, there is some bloke selling a high spec PX 5.5 shaft bang in between your £30 and £40... He must be mental.

Are they any good? How much would a pro charge to shaft a club without supplying the shaft? (Think his £30/40 included fitting the shaft)

I'm tempted to ask what the options are and I'll mention yours, he's a good pro he'd rather see me get a better shaft (ie yours) if its a cheaper option

Yeah I meant 3-4" not three quarters of an inch lol

I'm proper gutted because I've been using this club so much since I got it, been hitting all kinds of shots with it, low and short, off the tee, even been using it very effectively as a bit of a hybrid out of the rough

The real deal PX shafts are one of the best out there IMO. Pity that I just couldn't get on with it as it's too close to regular for me.
I can't see a pro charging that much just to remove one and glue another in.
Lets just say I would doubt if you will get anywhere near the quality of shaft for that £30 - £40 as you would likely end up with a made for out of god knows what.

Keep an eye on evilbay, I bought a stiff shaft for my RBZ for the total price of £7 delivered! They made a total of 50p after postage! Keep an eye on the ones ending at funny times or mid week etc! Better to get a decent shaft than some cheap and nasty one my pro was charging me £10 to pull and fit.
