I'm in the market for a new stick to go above my 3 iron and below my 3 wood. I've been playing with a Taylor Made 2 recovery but it needs updating. I'm going to get fitted but would like to know what preferences you guys have from your great locker of experience

I love my Taylor Made Burner 7 wood. Best club in my bag.

Easy to hit, great height into long par 3's and great out of fluffy lie's just off the fairways.

Truly, better than a rescue club - go to your range and try one.

I only carry a Driver, 5 Wood, and then 3 down etc.

Might be tempted to change the 5W for a 4, but thats only because of one or two particular holes at my home club, where another 10yds off the tee would be useful.

I've got a rescue instead of my 3 iron & 5 wood. It fits in between the two.

Tend not to carry a standard 3 iron (I didn't chose not get one with last set purchased). I use either a hybrid 2iron or 3 iron depending on where I'm playing.

Hi,
From my experience i have a taylormade mid tp 4 hybrid which goes almost the same distance as my 5 wood and is much easier to hit would have thought a 2 hybrid is almost the same as a 3 wood.

I've gone for the recovery/rescue option. I have 2 Taylor Made CGB Max rescues, they look very simular to a 5 - 7 wood, and I find they go just as well.

I reckon the answer is simple....and I'm surprised the rescues are getting all the votes!

If you want a club to use off tees mainly, go with the 5 wood, bigger and more predictable.

If you want a club predominantly for fairway/light rough, go with the rescue.

Both have their merits, but you'd need a pretty low loft rescue to match the distance of a 5 wood. My 5 wood is 17 or 18 degrees and goes miles. My rescue is 20 degrees and tops out 20(?)yards shorter than my 5 wood. In a full bag, I carry both, and a 3 iron too, for tight driving holes....when I need a hook or fade.....

Depends on your swing. If a 17 (approx.) degree rescue (2H) goes almost the same as a 5 wood, then go with the rescue.

That's fascinating (and I'm intrigued now). Do you know your lofts?

Rescue all the way for me.

I'm currently using The Perfect Club was given it a few years ago when a friend upgraded, he didn't like it. But it does great for me from most lies and off the tee when needed.

If I can try and clear up the business of degrees.
If you have a 5 wood and it has 17 degrees of loft and a rescue that has 17 degrees they WONT go the same distance, the rescue will go less. The reason is the shaft on the rescue will be between 2 and 3 inches shorter, hence the 5 wood will go further. HTH

Agree with RGDave, if your looking for a club to take of the tee for position and a bit more distance then 5 wood, If your looking for a 200 yard club to hit from the fairway then rescue. Rescue will also be easier to hit out of the rough.

I'm glad you wrote this....that's why I'm intrigued about a 4h (presuming 23-24 degrees) can go almost as far a 5 wood.

I'm also going to add that FOR ME, the hybrid clubs hit the ball higher than a traditional iron. I'd not considered getting a 3 iron until recently. I just guessed my 3h went that distance. In reality, I've actually replaced my 4 iron with my rescue and bought a 3 iron (old 2 iron loft) for tight driving holes.

For me (as a short-ish hitter) I use my 5 iron for 165-170, my 3h for 175-180 and my 3 iron for up to 185-190. If I want 190-200 yards off the fairway, I go with a 5 wood. I have to be careful though, because a sweet one can easily go miles....I don't tend to have this problem off the fairway...which is good and bad I guess.... :D

I guess the chap that hits his rescue so far must have discovered a usable technique which max's out the distance....which is probably great for him!! and he's a 10.5 h'cap player, so must know his distances....

I know my 3 hybrid goes a max of 195 and averages out around the 184 mark (via SC). My 5 wood (same loft) maxed out at 205 and averages 196. I tend to try where possible to go with the hybrid on longer par 3's as the shaft is shorter making it easier (in theory) to control and also because it flies higher and therefore lands softer.

I tend to use my 5 wood off the deck better than the hybrid so on long par 4 or par I'll prefer to hit the 5 wood for my second. However if I'm offline and the lie allows I'll then use the hybrid to maximise the distance and leave something like a 56 into the green

An interesting subject for me because i've just been fitted out for my new driver and 3 wood by my pro. Now i've always carried a 5 wood too but he suggested a strong hybrid instead because it can do the all round thingy that a 5 wood cant. I dont carry a 3 iron as I hit my 4 iron about 205 off a tee peg so i had a big gap (24* iron to 15* 3wood)
Anyhow i've bought an mx700 17* stiff hybrid that should be here on Monday and i'm looking forward to getting it on the range to check out it's distance and flight.

Tomorrow I'm treating myself to a visit with those friendly people at DG.

I have a hybrid that I'm not at all happy with, I tend to get decent strikes only off range mats, so it could be pining for the harder summer fairways. Whatever, I plan to try a few 19-21* clubs. To go with this I was thinking of upping my 5 to a 4-wood.

Last summer I bought a TM CGB Max 5 wood and a TM CGB Max #3 rescue. The 5 wood is 18* and the rescue is 19*. The difference in yardage was about 15 yards, this supprised me at first, but on reflection because the rescue is a slightly shorter shaft I do tend to time it a lot better. The 5 wood now is in my garage.
